About the Role

Austin Powder Ltd. is seeking a highly skilled Surface Mining Blaster to join our team. As a Blaster, you will be responsible for conducting field tests, determining the type and quantity of explosives required, and ensuring the safe and efficient execution of blasting operations.

Key Responsibilities
  • Conduct field tests to determine the type and quantity of explosives required for blasting operations.
  • Determine the depth and diameter of blast holes to ensure optimal blasting results.
  • Direct explosive trucks to load holes and ensure that explosives are loaded correctly.
  • Read instructions or diagrams and lay out drill patterns to ensure accurate placement of explosives.
  • Ensure that health and safety regulations are followed at all times during blasting operations.
  • Connect electrical wires, detonating cords, or fuses into series and connect series to blasting machines to detonate charges.
  • Measure location and stake out pattern of holes to be drilled, load blast holes with explosives, and detonate explosives to dislodge coal, ore, or rock.
  • Handle, store, and transport explosives and accessories in accordance with regulations and ensure that safety procedures are observed.
  • Assemble or direct other workers to assemble primer charges using selected detonators, fuses, detonating cords, and other materials.
Requirements
  • Provincial Blasting Licence
  • Blaster Trade Certification
  • Experience working with blasting machines, detonating cords, detonators, fuses, and safety mats.
  • Experience working in construction sites, open-pit mines, and quarries.
  • Ability to work under pressure and in physically demanding environments.
  • Manual dexterity and attention to detail.
  • 20/20 vision and sound discrimination.
  • Ability to stand for extended periods and handle heavy loads.
  • Excellent oral communication and teamwork skills.
