Respite Support Staff Position

We are seeking a qualified Respite Support Staff to join our team at The Salvation Army London Village. As a member of our team, you will work closely with adults and children with intellectual disabilities, providing care and support in a variety of settings.
Key Responsibilities:
- Provide physical, emotional, and medical care to program participants.
- Plan and facilitate recreation and leisure activities, as well as community outings, to promote inclusion and independence.
- Advocate on behalf of program participants to promote their health and well-being.
- Ensure participants follow through on personal care routines and daily living tasks.
- Provide intervention for behavioral challenges and ensure participants' safety.
- Liaise with parents, caregivers, and community partners as required.
- Transport participants in program vehicles and prepare meals and snacks.
- Complete house maintenance duties and maintain program supplies.
Communication and Administration:
- Record information in daily logs, shift change books, and other program documentation.
- Report identified needs to team members, supervisors, and parents/caregivers.
- Maintain participant records and program documentation.
Human Resources:
- Support and direct casual/relief staff, new staff/volunteers/students.
- Assume shift coordinator tasks as assigned.
Property and Shift Coordinator Responsibilities:
- Report property damage, equipment breakdowns, and repairs.
- Dispense medication and complete safety checks, logbook recordings, and intake/discharge functions.
Managerial/Technical Leadership Responsibility:
- Report directly to the Respite Program Supervisor or designate.
- Uphold Salvation Army policies, directives, and operating guidelines.
- Work within legal standards of the Ministry of Children, Community and Social Services.
- Participate in participant-specific and program-specific training.
- Attend scheduled staff meetings.
Working Conditions:
- This is a permanent part-time position based on 16 hours x 2 weekends per month.
- Flexibility in scheduling is required to meet program requirements.
- The Supervisor will set hours of work and work schedule.
- Some travel is associated with this position.
- Ability to lift/move up to 50 lbs.
- Frequent lifting, twisting, bending, crouching, reaching, pushing, and pulling.
- Walking and standing for long periods.
- Some kneeling, running may be required.
Qualifications and Education Requirements:
- Completed two (2) years of Community College in related education (Developmental Service Worker diploma, Child and Youth Worker diploma or equivalent) in the area of developmental disabilities.
- Current Non-Violent Crisis Intervention Certification.
- Current First Aid & CPR Certification.
- Alternative combinations of education and experience may be considered.
Experience and Knowledge:
- Minimum of one (1) year of prior related experience, including direct care work in a social service setting; dealing with crises.
Skills and Capabilities:
- Treat the property of The Salvation Army with due care and caution.
- Ability to maintain a high level of confidentiality and exercise good judgment.
- Ability to work independently and participate as an active and responsible team member in a cooperative team environment.
- Participate in mandatory orientation training, on-going professional development, and training.
- Participate in regular supervision and performance appraisal process.
- Ensure that all certifications are maintained as required.
- Represent the organization in a positive, professional, and engaging manner.
- Must comply with all Salvation Army policies, procedures, and associated legislation.
- Exhibit good listening skills, have strong oral/written communication skills, and respect authority.
- Self-motivated/disciplined.
- Work in compliance with OH&S Act and Regulations and abide by The Salvation Army's health and safety policies and procedures.
- Excellent interpersonal skills, integrity, and adaptability.
- Attention to detail, problem-solving, and analytical skills.
- Lead by example, by demonstrating a strong work ethic and a willingness to learn and be flexible in the face of change.
- Proficiency in all Microsoft Office products is required - i.e. Word, Excel, Publisher, PowerPoint, Email, and Internet.
- Fluent French verbal and written communication skills are an asset.
- Valid Ontario Class "G" Driver's License is required, current original copy of driver's abstract, which is satisfactory to The Salvation Army, in its sole discretion, also required.
- May require screening through The Salvation Army Abuse Registry.
- Ability to undergo applicable screening and background checks successfully that are satisfactory to The Salvation Army, in its sole discretion (i.e., The Salvation Army Abuse Registry) and provide an original copy of a Background Check with vulnerable sector screening.
- Ability and willingness to develop an understanding and support for the mission and purpose of The Salvation Army in Canada and its implications as related to position responsibilities.
