Job Summary

The Program Advisor, School of Nursing will provide academic advising to students in assigned programs, assist with coverage in other programs, and respond to student inquiries. The successful candidate will have excellent organization skills, ability to interpret admissions and transfer credit policies, and strong communication skills.

Key Responsibilities
  • Provide academic advising to students in assigned programs
  • Assist with coverage in other programs
  • Respond to student inquiries
  • Develop program plans and advise on course selection
  • Research and make recommendations on admission requirements and transfer credit assessments
  • Work closely with Associate Deans and Program Coordinators
  • Assess and monitor student records and notify the Program Coordinator of deficiencies associated with program continuation
  • Conduct degree audits for student graduations
  • Work closely with Enrolment Services, Recruiting, Delivery and Registrar's Office on resolving issues relating to admissions and advising
  • Establish rapport with students within portfolio
  • Take a student-centered approach and receive student referrals
  • Approve and prepare letters of permission for program students to take non-TRU courses
  • Evaluate and make recommendations according to transfer credit and block transfer articulation guidelines
  • Assist the respective Chair and Program Coordinator with data entry for course scheduling
  • Engage in continuous training and professional development related to assigned programs
  • Maintain student files in accordance with TRU policy around data retention and destruction
  • Represent TRU-SON at career fairs, trade shows, and recruiting events
  • Provide training to other staff relating to course and program advising, admissions processes, advising theory/practice and systems management
Qualifications
  • Grade 12 plus a Bachelor degree from a recognized university in a relevant discipline
  • Three years related work experience including:
    • Minimum of three years' experience in post-secondary institution or related educational environment assessing student's previous education, skills and background
    • One year working in a fast-paced environment
    • One year student advising experience
    • One-year marketing experience
    • Experience with National HSPnet System is an asset
    • Experience supporting Master level students and program committees is an asset

  • Excellent organization skills including the ability to set priorities, multi-task and work with minimal supervision, and remain focused on objectives
  • Ability to interpret admissions and transfer credit policies and guidelines, to recognize exceptions, and to take appropriate action to resolve problems
  • Demonstrated ability working in a fast-paced environment
  • Intermediate research and analytical skills
  • Ability to investigate and listen in order to solve problems and provide solutions
  • Aptitude for exacting and precise work, a high degree of accuracy, thoroughness, and attention to detail
  • Ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing with a widely diverse student population and coworkers and across functional areas of the institution
  • Ability to deal courteously and tactfully with students, staff and members of the public
  • Strong computer skills including student admissions and transfer credit modules and MS Office
  • Ability to maintain a student-focused as well as sales-focused approach
  • Familiarity with BC post-secondary education
  • Comprehensive knowledge of TRU programs and courses
  • Knowledge of student-tracking applications and tools
  • Familiarity in working with students from equity-seeking groups in program advising and/or demonstrated understanding of diversity and equity initiatives, including admissions
