Public Health Officer

Interior Health Authority is seeking a highly skilled Environmental Health Officer to join our team in Kelowna. As a key member of our Health Protection team, you will play a vital role in promoting and maintaining a high standard of public health.
Key Responsibilities- Conduct inspections and risk assessments to identify factors detrimental to community and environmental health.
- Enforce applicable health legislation, policies, and standards to prevent the occurrence of disease, injury, and public exposure to health hazards.
- Investigate complaints and undertake investigations on public health-related issues and environmental control matters.
- Prepare reports on investigational and inspectional work performed, and provide recommendations for corrective action.
- Respond to emergencies such as food, water, or vector-borne epidemics, or disasters, and participate in emergency contingency planning.
- Perform epidemiological investigations for cases of food poisoning and communicable diseases, and issue instructions or recommendations for implementation and compliance.
- Assist in the administration of the Community Care Facilities Act and the Adult and Child Care Facilities Regulations, and comment on new license applications.
- Review and assess plans or proposals for the operation or construction of food premises, water supplies, recreation facilities, community care facilities, personal service facilities, and industrial camps.
- Participate on Local Government committees and provide comments on Official Community Plan, Bylaw reviews, and amendments, and other land use planning documents.
- Utilize a progressive enforcement process that includes education, persuasion, and enforcement to ensure compliance with Health Legislation and standards.
- Issue recommendations, orders, tickets, injunctions, and other enforcement tools as required.
- Interpret and provide advice on legislation, policies, and procedures, and provide guidance to enable compliance with standards and policies.
