POSITION: Full-Time Medical Laboratory Technologist (OPSEU)
HOURS OF WORK: ROTATION IN A 24/7 LAB AND CROSS TRAINING INTO ANOTHER CORE LAB/TM AREA
Job OverviewThe responsibilities of this role encompass a variety of tasks, including but not limited to:
- Conducting analytical testing procedures on patient samples with minimal supervision, utilizing both manual techniques and automated systems.
- Maintaining the work area and performing routine preventative maintenance on laboratory equipment, ensuring compliance with established protocols and documenting results.
- Interpreting and adhering to relevant procedure and policy manuals.
- Executing quality control measures and troubleshooting when results fall outside acceptable limits, escalating unresolved issues to the supervising technologist.
- Identifying and addressing basic troubleshooting needs for tests and instruments, reporting any equipment malfunctions to designated technical personnel.
- Documenting and communicating completed results according to established protocols while maintaining accurate records.
- Preparing necessary reagents for testing as required.
- Adhering to safety protocols and maintaining a safe working environment at all times.
- Demonstrating the ability to prioritize tasks and respond to urgent demands for STAT testing, consulting with peers or supervisors regarding abnormal results or concerns.
- Effectively communicating with physicians, nurses, and other healthcare staff, including providing basic interpretations of laboratory test results and clarifying limitations of testing procedures.
- Utilizing the Laboratory Information System proficiently.
- Performing additional duties as assigned.
- Contributing to a safe environment for patients, staff, and visitors.
- Graduation from an accredited Medical Laboratory Technology Program (General or Specialty).
- Current registration with CMLTO; candidates who have completed their Medical Laboratory Program and are awaiting exam results may be considered for non-registered MLT status, transitioning to registered status upon successful registration.
- Preferred recent experience in Blood Bank/Core laboratory settings.
- Demonstrated satisfactory work performance.
- Preferred proficiency in the Laboratory Information System.
- Preferred proficiency in MS Office applications (Word, Excel, Outlook).
