Job Title: Staff Lawyer

We are seeking a highly skilled and dedicated Staff Lawyer to join our team at Legal Aid Ontario. As a Staff Lawyer, you will play a critical role in providing high-quality legal services and support to community legal clinics and student legal services organizations across Ontario.

About the Role:

The Staff Lawyer will provide legal advice and opinions, as well as a range of legal supports, to advocates in community legal clinics and student legal services organizations. This will include writing case-specific research memoranda, supporting litigation at all levels of tribunals and courts in clinic law areas, and contributing to various clinic system and SLSO activities.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Provide legal advice and opinions to advocates in community legal clinics and student legal services organizations
  • Write case-specific research memoranda and support litigation at all levels of tribunals and courts in clinic law areas
  • Contribute to various clinic system and SLSO activities, including publications in key areas of clinic law and practice, training for clinic and SLSO caseworkers, and court litigation support
  • Work collaboratively with the Director, Clinic Resource Office, and other team members to achieve the goals and objectives of the Clinic Resource Office
Requirements:
  • Lawyer (L1) member in good standing of the Law Society of Ontario
  • Excellent legal writing and analytical skills
  • Significant recent experience practicing, and demonstrated expertise in, one or more major areas of clinic law in Ontario (e.g. social assistance, housing, CPP, EI)
  • Experience appearing before one or more clinic law tribunals
  • Demonstrated strong interest in clinic law issues
  • Demonstrated superior legal research skills with traditional and electronic research sources
  • Strong computer skills, including demonstrated advanced ability with Microsoft Word and Outlook, and experience with other Microsoft Office applications
Assets:
  • Experience using the CRO website and practice resources
  • Experience practicing in a variety of clinic law areas (e.g. housing, social assistance, CPP, EI, human rights & the Charter)
  • Advanced knowledge of administrative law and procedure
  • Court litigation experience
  • Experience delivering legal training presentations
  • Ability to speak, read and write French
