Job Title: Staff Lawyer

We are seeking a highly skilled and dedicated Staff Lawyer to join our team at Scarborough Community Legal Services (SCLS). As a Staff Lawyer, you will play a critical role in providing legal services to low-income individuals in our community.

Job Summary:

The Staff Lawyer will be responsible for providing summary advice, brief services, and casework in employment law. The successful candidate will have the opportunity to work on a variety of cases, including court appeals, judicial reviews, and other complex legal actions. The Staff Lawyer will also be responsible for conducting legal research, supervising the legal work of other team members, and identifying and carrying out law reform and community organizing initiatives.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Provide summary advice, brief services, and casework in employment law, including court appeals, judicial reviews, and other complex legal actions.
  • Conduct legal research and provide recommendations to the team.
  • Supervise the legal work of other team members and provide guidance and support as needed.
  • Identify and carry out law reform and community organizing initiatives in collaboration with the legal teams.
  • Represent the Clinic to community groups and provide resources and expertise on employment law and poverty law issues.
Qualifications and Experience:

To be successful in this role, you will need to have:

  • A law degree from a recognized university and a license to practice law in Ontario.
  • 1-7 years of relevant legal experience, including experience in employment law and poverty law.
  • Strong knowledge of related legislation, including the Employment Standards Act, Employment Insurance Act, Occupational Health and Safety Act, and Human Rights Code.
  • Experience litigating matters before administrative tribunals or courts.
  • A demonstrated commitment to social justice and working for positive social change on issues that affect low-income individuals and groups.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to work with clients from diverse backgrounds.
What We Offer:

We offer a competitive salary range of $75,000 to $83,830, commensurate with qualifications and experience. We also offer a comprehensive benefits package and enrollment in the CAAT DB Plus pension plan. This is a permanent full-time position that is part of the OPSEU bargaining unit.
