Job Title: Food Safety Specialist

MT Talent Solutions Inc. is proud to partner with a progressive and growing food distributor to source their next Food Safety Specialist. The Specialist is a key part of the Quality department and the company's overall success.

Key Responsibilities:
  1. Manage the supplier approval program (MAP) for product suppliers and ensure the database is up-to-date.
  2. Conduct risk evaluations when approving a new supplier, facility, or country of origin.
  3. Assess supplier processing facilities for frozen produce and provide food safety approval or rejection based on the MAP requirements, FSMA, and SFCR regulations.
  4. Investigate supplier nonconformities and follow up on the root cause associated corrective actions, verification of the completion of corrective action/preventative actions, and validation of the effectiveness of the corrective actions.
  5. Participate in the establishment of high-level standards that suppliers must respect to ensure food safety.
  6. Perform facility verification activities and virtual audits when required to ensure suppliers are meeting MAP requirements and GFSI certification requirements.
  7. Follow-up with suppliers to confirm that food safety and integrity gaps are mitigated.
  8. Review MRLs and spray programs to ensure compliance with destination standards.
  9. Ensure compliance with labeling guideline destination standards.
  10. Perform periodic monitoring of the approved product suppliers and contribute to KPIs to demonstrate the performance of the product suppliers.
  11. Support product recalls and manage mock recalls and traceability exercises as required.
  12. Ensure quality compliance of incoming and outgoing samples.
  13. Ensure supplier record library is up-to-date as per the standard protocols.
  14. Stay at the forefront of new technologies, developments, and scientific discoveries related to fresh and frozen businesses.
  15. Identify opportunities for continuous improvement in the supplier management system and support implementation of any new programs, processes, or initiatives.
Requirements:
  1. Post-secondary degree in Food Science, Food Safety, Microbiology, or other related education.
  2. 2 or more years' experience in a related food safety/quality role involving auditing.
  3. Experience in frozen foods and/or produce related manufacturing/distribution is preferred.
  4. Relevant certification/qualification programs such as Lead Auditor, Internal Auditor, PCQI, ASQ, HACCP, etc. are strongly preferred.
  5. Strong English communication skills are required. Other language skills such as French, Spanish, German, or Mandarin are an asset.
  6. Highly analytical, detail-oriented, and organized with a strong sense of values and integrity.
  7. Proven ability to meet defined deadlines and adhere to required processes.
  8. Ability to adapt and thrive in a fast-paced environment.
  9. Proactive problem-solver with strong interpersonal skills.
  10. Strong computer skills including full MS Office Suite, PowerBI, Visio.
  11. Valid driver's license and ability to travel to supplier sites 10-20% of the time.
