Medical Laboratory Assistant

We are seeking a Medical Laboratory Assistant to join our team at Nova Scotia Health. The successful candidate will work in collaboration with and support all members of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine by performing various functions relating to the pre and post-analytical phases of testing.
The ideal candidate will have a strong understanding of medical terminology, excellent written and verbal communication skills, and the ability to accurately number and label specimens. They will also be able to adapt to updates and changes in operating procedures and have basic computer skills, preferably with experience in Meditech.
The Medical Laboratory Assistant will be responsible for performing tasks such as specimen procurement, data entry, media preparation, sterilization, and clerical duties. They will also be required to interact with various stakeholders and clients, including healthcare providers and patients.
Key Responsibilities:
- Perform various functions relating to the pre and post-analytical phases of testing
- Work in collaboration with and support all members of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine
- Perform tasks such as specimen procurement, data entry, media preparation, sterilization, and clerical duties
- Interact with various stakeholders and clients, including healthcare providers and patients
Requirements:
- Recognized Medical Laboratory Assistant Program or equivalent
- Candidates must have successfully completed the Medical Laboratory Assistant examinations of the Canadian Society of Medical Laboratory Science and have current registration with CSMLS
- Strong written and verbal communication skills
- Basic understanding of medical terminology
- Ability to accurately number and label specimens
- Ability to adapt to updates and changes in operating procedures
- Basic computer skills, preferably with experience in Meditech
Working Conditions:
- Must be able to work rotating shifts, weekends, and/or holidays
- May be required to work off-site, including long term care facilities, communities, or private homes
