Job Summary:

We are seeking a highly skilled and dedicated Special Education Teacher to join our team. As a Special Education Teacher, you will play a vital role in supporting students with special needs and promoting their academic and personal growth.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Teaching and Assessing: Prepare, teach, and assess academic subjects in accordance with the Ontario curriculum, incorporating First Nation cultural knowledge and activities into the curriculum and classroom teaching.

  • Culturally Responsive Teaching: Collaborate with the Language and Cultural Coordinator to integrate First Nation cultural knowledge and activities into the curriculum and classroom teaching.

  • Professional Development: Participate in ongoing professional development to enhance teaching skills and stay up-to-date with best practices in special education.

  • Communication and Collaboration: Provide necessary information to the Principal for reports, coordinate meetings with parents and other professionals as needed, and work collaboratively with school teams to assess student needs and develop individualized educational plans.

  • Behavioral Supports: Develop and implement behavioral intervention plans, provide crisis response and management for students experiencing significant behavioral and emotional challenges, and work with school teams to assess student needs and determine appropriate interventions.

  • Transition Planning: Assist in the implementation of individualized transition plans to ensure students receive the skills necessary for successful full-time re-entry in general education classrooms.

  • Record Keeping: Maintain accurate records and inform administration and staff of student or family contacts.

  • Professional Conduct: Adhere to Board policies and stay up-to-date with updates and changes.

  • Community Involvement: Participate in local community and cultural events, promoting the values and traditions of the Fort Albany First Nation community.

Requirements:

  • Ontario College of Teachers Certification: Possess an Ontario College of Teachers certification (preferred) and be a member in good standing.

  • Culturally Responsive Teaching Practices: Have knowledge of culturally responsive teaching practices and be able to integrate First Nation cultural knowledge and activities into the curriculum and classroom teaching.

  • Special Education Experience: Have special education training or experience working with students with special needs.

  • Leadership Skills: Possess excellent leadership skills, including the ability to work independently and in a team environment.

  • Interpersonal Skills: Demonstrate excellent interpersonal skills, including the ability to communicate effectively with students, parents, and colleagues.

  • Classroom Management: Possess excellent classroom management skills, including the ability to create a structured environment that promotes student learning and well-being.
