Job Summary

We are seeking a highly motivated and compassionate Veterinary Assistant to join our team at 404 Veterinary Emergency and Referral Hospital. As a key member of our Zoological Companion Animal department, you will provide exceptional patient care, client communication, and support to our veterinary team.

Responsibilities
  • Provide compassionate care to all clients and patients
  • Administer treatments as directed under the supervision of an RVT and/or DVM
  • Care for patients, including feeding, cleaning kennels and/or patients, cleaning food dishes, and any other species-specific tasks
  • Promptly inform the attending RVT or DVM of any change in status of the patient
  • Demonstrate proper patient handling techniques when assisting RVTs and DVMs and is able to restrain fractious or potentially fractious patients
  • Handle patients that are ill, stressed or in pain that may require critical care and sensitive handling
  • Maintain the hospital work areas by keeping them organized, having floors swept and mopped routinely, and kennels cleaned daily or when soiled (even if occupied)
  • Monitor and record patient urination, bowel movements and food intake throughout the day
  • Assist in preparation for emergency procedures/surgery, assist in monitoring patients during procedures and on recovery, and moving patients
  • Assist DVMs and RVTs in collection of blood/urine samples, radiographs and FAST scan ultrasounds
  • Assist RVTs with daily tasks and patient care as directed (wound/incision care, running in-house bloodwork, changing IV bandages, obtaining vitals on patients as directed by RVT)
  • Provide emotional and physical support for patients recovering from anesthesia
  • Prepare appointment rooms for examinations (ensuring rooms are stocked and clean) as required
  • Perform general hospital maintenance, laundry, and ordering/stocking inventory, as required
  • Maintain cleanliness of hospital facility, inside and outside
  • Facilitate visits between patients and clients and answer basic questions
  • Ensure requests of families of deceased patients are followed for cremation and memorial keepsakes
  • Any additional tasks or duties as directed by a department Supervisor or Leadership team
