Cardiac Surgery Assistant

The Interior Health Authority is seeking an Associate Physician to join the KGH Cardiac Surgery team. As a Surgical Assistant, you will work alongside the multidisciplinary team to provide high-quality patient care. Your responsibilities will include assisting with patient preparation and positioning, helping to open and close the chest, and cannulation/decannulation for Cardio-pulmonary Bypass. You will also assist the surgeon during the operation, assist with conduit harvest and closing of the incisions, and help transfer the patient to the Cardiac Surgery Intensive Care Unit (CSICU).
In addition to your role in the operating room, you will support patient care outside of the OR by ensuring patients are ready for surgery, rounding on post-operative patients, and communicating with the Cardiac Surgery Nurse Practitioner, Triage Surgeon, and Most Responsible Physician (MRP) regarding patient postoperative condition.
Key Duties:
•Perform surgical assist for open heart and other cardiac surgery procedures.
•Provide on-call services for the cardiac surgery program as a surgical assist.
•Perform other duties as required and for which you have been assessed to provide, within terms of employment, and all other statutory and regulatory standards, limits, and conditions.
•Be accountable for participation in all divisional and hospital quality activities as required by the Department Head.
•Participate in self-evaluation and regular performance reviews, including structured feedback tools as identified by Department Head (Physician 360's, etc.).
