Materials Artist: Crafting Stylized Environments and Assets

Montreal, Quebec, Canada 2K Full time

At 2K, we're seeking a detail-oriented Technical Materials Artist to join our team in creating high-quality materials for stylized environments, props, and characters. This role requires a blend of technical understanding and keen 3D artistic skills to develop visually stunning textures and materials.

We're looking for an artist who loves to work out the technical aspects behind complex materials like shattered ice, magical crystals, or flowing lava. You should be able to translate traditional art styles into shaders that mimic hand-painted effects or Unreal rendering.

This position involves working with the material editor in Unreal to create optimized custom materials and material functions used by our texture team. As a liaison between the Materials team and Core Tech/Tech Art teams, you'll collaborate with engineers and other artists to ensure our materials are performant and meet content creator expectations.

Key Responsibilities
  • Create visually striking textures and materials for physically-based rendering
  • Work with the Art Director and Lead Materials Artist to develop materials and shaders fitting our stylized look
  • Collaborate with engineering and technical artists to optimize materials
  • Serve as a bridge between the Materials team and Core Tech/Tech Art teams

You'll need to effectively communicate with team members, production, and management to ensure project goals and deadlines are met. Strong organizational and communication skills, along with attention to detail, are crucial for this role.

We require:

Essential Skills and Qualifications
  • 3+ years of experience as a Texture or Technical Artist
  • Prior experience with creating Unreal materials and shaders from scratch
  • Ability to quickly prototype proof-of-concept ideas and looks based on concept or reference
  • Strong knowledge of texturing software, preferably Substance Designer and Painter
  • Familiarity with material layer systems
  • Experience with shader networks and procedural texturing
  • Familiarity with Perforce
  • Excellent time management skills and ability to prioritize issues while developing a production pipeline

A competitive salary for this role is around $95,000 - $120,000 per year, depending on location and experience. We believe in fostering a collaborative environment where each team member can strive for excellence and happiness.

We're making the next BioShock, an iconic franchise that continues to captivate audiences worldwide. Our passion for this series drives us to create something extraordinary, and we're excited to share this journey with talented individuals like you.
