About the Role

We are seeking a highly skilled Technologist 2 to join our team at FortisBC. As a key member of our Distribution Planning department, you will play a critical role in ensuring the safe and reliable delivery of energy to our customers.

Key Responsibilities
  • System Capacity Planning
    • Develop and maintain long-term capital plans for distribution assets, including transmission pressure laterals, stations, and distribution piping.
    • Perform hydraulic analyses to confirm distribution pipe sizing and identify system capacity shortfalls.
    • Develop and document detailed 5-year capital plans and budgets.
  • Operational Support
    • Respond to routine and emergency operational requests and inquiries in an efficient and professional manner.
    • Perform hydraulic analyses to determine system improvement requirements and document findings.
    • Identify customers affected by system damage and size emergency bypass.
  • Distribution Modeling
    • Create, update, and verify distribution models using steady state analyses.
    • Review models with Operations personnel to ensure accuracy and reliability.
  • Professional Services
    • Provide professional services to internal clients, including hydraulic analyses and feasibility studies.
    • Identify emergency sectionalization areas and provide recommendations for improvement.
  • Annual Winter Operations Review
    • Perform hydraulic analyses to confirm operability of current distribution assets and level of service to interruptible customers.
    • Prepare and present distribution system capacity status and operational plans to Operations personnel.
  • Support to Manager and Engineers
    • Develop long-term alternatives for transmission pipeline laterals based on client requirements.
    • Establish level of service to interruptible customers and perform hydraulic analyses to identify the long-term least cost of service option.
  • Engineering Specifications
    • Provide input to the preparation of engineering specifications for the hydraulic design of distribution assets.
    • Update and review standards to ensure compliance with industry regulations.
  • Liaison and Data Management
    • Maintain liaison with various personnel inside and outside the company to ensure appropriate and timely acquisition of necessary data.
    • Maintain data and records associated with the job functions.
    Requirements
    • Completion of an Applied Sciences Technologist and Technicians of British Columbia (ASTTBC) recognized post-secondary technologist diploma program in gas and petroleum, civil, mechanical, or related technology.
    • Certification at the technologist level by the ASTTBC.
    • Minimum of two (2) years directly related work experience in system capacity planning.
    • Full understanding of fluid mechanics and thermodynamics properties and behaviors of natural gas and other related organic hydrocarbon products.
    • Understanding of distribution operations, including transmission pressure laterals, intermediate pressure lines, distribution piping, and stations.
    • Understanding of midstream gas supply, transportation service functions, and rules of transmission pressure laterals, as well as commercial terms and conditions of large industrial and transportation service contracts.
    • Full literacy of computer hydraulic simulation of distribution assets and its components, including pipeline systems, distribution systems, compressor stations, and control devices in steady state.
    • Strong computer skills in applications used in the department, and skills with general office software applications. Programming/scripting skill is desired.
    • Analytical skills, attention to detail, decision-making skills.
    • Ability to produce plans and analyses with minimal coaching.
    • Valid British Columbia Driver's license.
