Clinical Nurse

In accordance with the Mission, Vision and Values of Provincial Health Services Authority, patient safety is a top priority. As a Clinical Nurse, you will provide trauma informed nursing care to clients with complex physical or mental health needs. Your expertise will encompass a wide range of acute and chronic illnesses, including communicable diseases, substance dependency, and mental health issues. You will perform physical, substance use, and psychiatric assessments, refer clients to physicians for further examination, and administer prescribed treatments and medications. Your role will also involve observing, monitoring, and documenting client progress, as well as providing education and support to clients and groups using a health promotion approach. You will work collaboratively with the interdisciplinary team, other healthcare professionals, clients, families, and the community to deliver high-quality care.
Duties and Accountabilities:
1. Provide direct trauma informed health care services to clients with complex physical or mental health needs. Perform physical, substance use, and psychiatric assessments, collect specimens, refer clients to physicians for further examination, and administer prescribed treatments and medications according to protocols. Triage Health Service Requests from clients and make appropriate treatment plans or referrals.
2. Observe, monitor, evaluate, and document client progress, symptoms, and behavioral changes, and perform a variety of health care interventions utilizing nursing skills and medical equipment. Initiate and facilitate discharge planning in collaboration with the interprofessional treatment team, and identify referrals to other healthcare professionals.
3. Provide education and support to clients and groups using a health promotion approach regarding matters such as contraception, birth control, sexually transmitted diseases, upper respiratory tract infections, urinary tract infections, and minor dermatology problems.
4. Work collaboratively with other healthcare professionals, clients, families, and the community to identify and resolve health issues, cultural and language barriers, ethical dilemmas, and coordination and integration of care. Make referrals to other service providers as appropriate.
5. Maintain accurate computerized and paper records in accordance with established procedures and policies, prepare and maintain statistical information, correspondence, reports, and other documentation. Document patient/family perspectives and nursing observations.
6. Use appropriate supplies and equipment in accordance with organizational standards and safe care requirements. Problem-solve equipment malfunctions with technical staff. Handle, store, and dispose of workplace hazardous materials and sharps in accordance with established procedures.
7. Maintain awareness of current Occupational Health & Safety guidelines and standards. Participate in incident investigations as required. Respond to incidents and provide nursing care such as injuries to staff or visitors, Code Blue or Code Yellow emergencies involving patients, hazardous and/or minor spills, aggressive and/or disruptive behaviors; provide first aid to injured persons up to Occupational First Aid Level 2 standards. Complete First Aid reports and Incident Report forms. Maintain competencies with the PHSA Provincial Violence Prevention Curriculum.
8. Participate in unit/team/program activities to enhance and optimize the delivery of care and facilitate evidence-based, trauma informed, and client and family centered nursing practice. Promote quality management principles. Identify and report unsafe practice/professional conduct in accordance with professional standards and organizational policies.
9. Apply an evidence-based approach to clinical problem solving through methods such as reviewing relevant literature/resources and applying approved research findings in clinical practice to support the research culture of the organization. Evaluate results in collaboration with the interdisciplinary team.
10. Participate on committees as directed to promote optimal support for clients, facilitate the resolution of issues, and advocate for the goals and objectives of the clinic/team/program.
11. Demonstrate and/or provide guidance on clinical and health-related tasks to designated caregivers and guide the clinical experience of assigned students and new staff. Provide input to the Manager and/or designate as requested on individual's progress in achieving established standards of nursing care.
12. Maintain standards of nursing practice and develop professional competence through in-service, interprofessional case conferences, team meetings, and other educational means, as required by the employer.
13. Maintain and update own clinical knowledge within area of practice, and develop a plan in collaboration with designated personnel/team for professional development. Review progress to ensure that goals are achieved within established time frames.
14. Perform regular security functions to maintain the safety and security of clients, staff, families, and the general public at all times, and take immediate action to mitigate risks. Assess individual client risk factors and incorporate risk mitigation strategies into clients' care plans to optimize safety and security for staff, other inmates, and the general public.
15. Perform other related duties as assigned.
Qualifications:
Current practicing registration as a Registered Psychiatric Nurse or Registered Nurse with the British Columbia College of Nurses and Midwives (BCCNM).
Two years' recent experience providing trauma informed acute or community health nursing care/services to patients who have a combination of physical, psychiatric, and/or concurrent substance abuse/misuse disorders, or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.
Occupational First Aid Level 2 certification (OFA Level 3 certification for positions at the Ford Mountain Correctional Centre)
