Telesat is seeking a skilled Database Administrator to join our team in Ottawa, Canada. As a key member of our Platform Engineering team, you will be responsible for designing, building, and deploying various Cloud-based and on-premise databases.

The ideal candidate will have a strong understanding of database systems, including relational and NoSQL databases, and experience with Cloud-based resources such as AWS, Azure, and GCP. You will work closely with our team to provide supporting capabilities, design, and deployment of databases, as well as monitor database performance, availability, and security.

Main Responsibilities

  • Develop and implement data administration policy, standards, and models.
  • Research and document data requirements, data collection, and administration policy, data access rules, and security.
  • Develop policies and procedures for network and/or Internet database access and usage and for the backup and recovery of data.
  • Conduct research and provide advice to other information systems professionals regarding the collection, availability, security, and suitability of data.
  • Write scripts related to stored procedures and triggers.
  • May lead and coordinate teams of data administrators in the development and implementation of data policies, standards, and models.

Education & Experience Required

  • Bachelor's degree in a technical or engineering field or equivalent practical experience.
  • At least 2 years of relevant industry experience with the deployment, management, and automation of Cloud-based resources.
  • At least 3 years of experience in the operation of databases and related environments.
  • Proven experience in the design, build, and operations of both relational and NoSQL database infrastructure.
  • Experience in the administration of computer systems such as systems administrator in an operations role.
  • Strong understanding and hands-on experience in operations and management of public cloud-computing environments.
  • Understanding of DevOps concepts.
  • Familiarity with SRE concepts would be an asset.
  • Understanding of microservices and containerization and container orchestration would be an asset.
  • Certifications in Azure and/or AWS, GCP would be an asset.

Decision Making & Supervision

  • In this role, the incumbent will have some influence on the use and standardization of database environments.
  • The incumbent will rely on their experience to make decisions on the operations, customization, and tuning of environments and services.

Working Conditions

  • Generally comfortable working conditions with lifting and onsite installations.
  • Moderate visual concentration in use of video display terminal.
