Job Summary

The Power Line Technician is a critical role at Toronto Hydro, responsible for constructing, operating, maintaining, and repairing overhead and underground electrical and distribution systems. This position requires a high level of technical expertise, physical stamina, and attention to safety protocols.

Key Responsibilities
  • Construct, operate, maintain, and repair overhead and underground electrical and distribution systems
  • Erect and maintain steel, wood, fiberglass, laminate, and concrete poles, structures, and other related hardware
  • Install, maintain, and repair overhead and underground powerlines and cables, and other associated equipment
  • Splice and terminate conductors and related wiring to connect power distribution and transmission networks
  • Perform job planning with the Crew Leader and/or Supervisor and follow the plan
  • Select, operate, and maintain tools and equipment
  • Safely operate Company vehicles and maintain necessary licenses and training for the use of Company vehicles
  • Install, maintain, and remove power pole systems
  • Install and maintain overhead power systems
  • Install and maintain conductors and control wiring, including powerlines and cables
  • Troubleshoot overhead and underground power systems
  • Install and maintain underground distribution systems
  • Install, maintain, and remove transformers
  • Install, operate, and maintain system protection, control, and instrumentation equipment
  • Handle energized lines using rubber protective equipment
  • Handle energized lines using live line tool methods
  • Select, maintain, and operate rigging equipment
  • Follow regulatory procedures and employer's procedures
  • Identify defects, contraventions, and dangers
  • Apply discretion to solve occupational health and safety problems, and report unresolved problems
Requirements
  • Fully qualified Red Seal 434A Journey Person or a combination of education, equivalent designations, and/or experience as a Journey Person may be considered
  • Valid DZ license in good standing
  • Physically able to perform the essential duties in all weather conditions
  • Comfortable working at heights and in confined spaces
  • Ability to read and interpret distribution system construction drawings and supporting documents
  • Knowledge of the Electrical Safety Authority Regulation 22/04, Toronto Hydro, and Utility Work Protection Code, WHMIS, CPR, First Aid, and all other applicable legislation
  • Demonstrated proficiency in a PC Windows environment and associated desktop software applications
