We are seeking an experienced Energy Sustainability Specialist to join our team and contribute to our mission of creating a safe, accessible, and environmentally friendly campus environment.

Job Summary

This role will be responsible for implementing and managing key energy reduction and water conservation initiatives across the university's eight million square feet of space.

You will work closely with the Energy Manager to provide technical guidance on building automation systems, balancing end-user requirements, system functionality, environmental sustainability, and financial impact.

The ideal candidate will have a strong background in mechanical engineering, project management experience, and excellent communication skills.

Responsibilities

  • Strategic Planning: Provide technical leadership in developing solutions for teaching, research, and infrastructure projects, and offer advice to the UW Energy Manager on sustainability initiatives.
  • Utilities and Energy Operations: Work with the Associate Director and Chief Stationary Engineer on daily operations, maintenance, and preventative maintenance program development.
  • Building Re-commissioning: Ensure that building re-commissioning is done when required to maintain energy-efficient and reliable operation of HVAC and electrical systems.
  • Data Analysis: Collect and analyze building automation system measurements to coordinate testing, balancing, adjusting, and scheduling of systems as required.
  • Health and Safety: Ensure that processes within assigned division are in place, understood, and followed to ensure safety and compliance with applicable codes and standards.
  • Client Relations: Represent Plant Operations in responding to complaints, concerns, and questions from the UW campus community regarding air quality, temperature, and comfort.
  • Project Management: Lead and manage projects through scaled project initiation, planning, execution, and closure phases according to culture and processes defined by UW and Plant Operations Design & Construction.
  • Project Recovery: Engage stakeholders, analyze projects in trouble, and work with the Energy Manager to provide resolution and make appropriate changes to ensure project recovery.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's Degree in Mechanical Engineering
  • Current Professional Engineering license (within Ontario)
  • Certified Energy Manager and/or Certified Commissioning Building Professional is an asset
  • A minimum four years of progressive experience as a licensed professional designing, planning, and constructing building mechanical systems within a major institutional sector such as education, post-secondary education, hospital or consulting service industry in Canada
  • Demonstrated project management experience developing project plans, schedules, and budgets
  • Physical Plant design experience within the building construction industry will be considered an asset
  • Extensive knowledge related to applicable codes, building HVAC, automation, and mechanical infrastructure systems is essential
  • Demonstrated track record of effective leadership and collaboration with colleagues and direct reports
  • Excellent judgment and strong problem-solving skills, including the ability to understand the financial impact of relevant options
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with a deep commitment to customer service, proven innovative approach to problem solving, and an aptitude towards service excellence and responsiveness
  • Outstanding analytical and time management abilities
  • Strong ethics and diplomacy
  • Ability to supervise and review design to ensure safety, code compliance, and operational efficiency
  • Ability to stamp (take legal responsibility) for design work
  • Proficiency in the latest version of AutoCAD is an asset
  • Sound understanding of drawing principles and standards
  • Demonstrated track record of design and implementation of energy conservation and sustainability measures
  • Demonstrated ability to manage complex and high-risk construction projects
  • PMP accreditation is an asset
  • Strong current knowledge of HVAC design and operation
  • Understanding of Building Code, Fire Code, TSSA regulations
  • Experience in institutional projects is preferred
  • Proficient in using MSOffice

Benefits

The successful candidate will enjoy a competitive salary range of $120,000 - $150,000 per annum, commensurate with experience.
