The University of Toronto is leading a transformative shift in scientific discovery with its Acceleration Consortium (AC), a global community of academia, industry, and government.

The AC leverages AI, robotics, materials sciences, and high-throughput chemistry to create self-driving laboratories (SDLs), also called materials acceleration platforms (MAPs). These autonomous labs rapidly design materials and molecules needed for a sustainable, healthy, and resilient future.

Staff Scientist Role

This Staff Scientist role will work with a diverse team of leading experts at the University of Toronto, including Professors Anatole von Lilienfeld, Florian Shkurti, Animesh Garg, Alán Aspuru-Guzik, Oleksandr Voznyy, and more. The role reports to the Academic Director and Executive Director of the Acceleration Consortium.

Main Responsibilities
  • Advance the field of AI-driven autonomous discovery and develop materials and molecules required to address society's largest challenges, such as climate change and water pollution.
Key Components and Duties
  • SDL and Automation Development: Determine the required capabilities of the SDLs, develop SDL plans, design novel instruments, and select equipment in collaboration with the AC community.
  • Research Direction: Develop research programs that leverage the AC's SDLs and support the research objectives of AC faculty and industry partners.
  • Other: Provide consulting services, organize research-focused events, and collaborate with industry partners.
Requirements
  • Ph.D. in chemistry, materials science, life sciences, physics, engineering, robotics, computer science, or related discipline.
  • Five to 10 years of experience in accelerated research and development, including experience working closely with a Principal Investigator or as a Principal Investigator.
  • Strong experience and expert knowledge of AI and automation.
  • Experience working with industry partners and on industry-led research and development projects.
  • Strong publication record and scholarly publication record.
  • Proficient in general organic synthesis skills, electronic/hardware-oriented programming, and machine learning.
