Job Summary

We are seeking a highly skilled Drainage Technologist to join our team at the City of Hamilton. As a key member of our Roadway Maintenance department, you will play a critical role in ensuring the effective management of our drainage infrastructure.

Key Responsibilities
  • Provide technical support for the implementation of the Right-of-Way Drainage Program, ensuring compliance with legislation, policies, and guidelines.
  • Conduct drainage management investigations and planning services, considering the needs of the City, residents, and businesses.
  • Monitor and assess the working capacity of existing roadway drainage infrastructure, developing and maintaining a computerized database of input, manipulation, and retrieval of data.
  • Perform inspections of roadway drainage infrastructure, reviewing and evaluating performance, and recommending maintenance, retrofits, and enhancements as required.
  • Assist in forecasting and planning maintenance works for roadway drainage infrastructure, including culverts, ditches, drainage channels, and catch basins.
  • Liaise with external agencies, such as the Ministry of Natural Resources, Ministry of Environment, and Conservation Authorities, to ensure compliance with regulations and policies.
  • Respond to technical inquiries from the public, staff, and other departments, providing recommendations and guidance on right-of-way drainage issues.
  • Prepare reports and correspondence related to right-of-way drainage issues, including operational and technical performance against established benchmarks.
Requirements
  • Diploma in Civil Engineering Technology or a Bachelor's Degree in Civil Engineering or Water Resources Engineering, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Membership with the Ontario Association of Certified Engineering Technicians and Technologists.
  • Specific knowledge and experience in drainage management, stormwater management, and sediment/erosion control practices.
  • Thorough knowledge of statutes, regulations, and by-laws affecting the Section, including the Clean Water Act, Drainage Act, and Source Water Protection Act.
  • Highly effective research and analytical, written and oral communication, presentation, interpersonal, and organizational skills.
  • Comprehensive knowledge of computer software applications, including Microsoft Office, Hansen, Microstation, ArcGIS, and other related software.
