Job Summary
We are seeking a highly skilled and detail-oriented Laboratory Assistant, Anatomic Pathology to join our team at Provincial Laboratory Medicine Services (PLMS). As a Laboratory Assistant, you will play a critical role in supporting our pathologists in gross tissue description and fine needle aspiration, ensuring accurate and efficient laboratory testing.
Key Responsibilities
- Provide assistance to pathologists in gross tissue description and fine needle aspiration, ensuring accurate and efficient laboratory testing.
- Load cassettes on tissue processors, change, recycle, and dispose of reagents according to established procedures.
- Label glass slides for section cutting according to established procedures.
- Dispose of pathology samples according to established procedures.
- Prepare specimens and other items for shipment by packaging, labeling, and filling out requisitions as needed.
- Maintain laboratory equipment, including tissue processors, stainers, coverslippers, refrigerators, freezers, centrifuges, water baths, and testing equipment, by performing duties such as cleaning and temperature recording, and performing maintenance procedures according to established protocols.
- Keep workstations well stocked with supplies, monitor supplies, and advise the supervisor when supplies need replenishing, and perform related duties such as receiving, recording, and storing new shipments of supplies.
- Maintain daily cleaning and disinfection of work areas and equipment according to established schedules and procedures.
- Receive telephone and fax requests for information and direct requests according to established procedures.
- File and organize reports, requisitions, specimens, blocks, and slides.
- Enter workload units in the computer system.
- Demonstrate work routines to new laboratory personnel.
- Perform other related duties as assigned.
Requirements
- Completion of Grade 12 and successful completion of a recognized Lab Assistant training program, plus one year's recent related experience, or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.
- Ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing.
- Ability to deal with others effectively.
- Ability to organize work.
- Ability to type at 25 wpm.
- Ability to operate related equipment.
- Physical ability to carry out the duties of the position.
- Commitment to upholding the shared responsibility of creating lasting and meaningful reconciliation in Canada, as per TRC (2015), and BC's Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples Act (2019).
- As a strong asset for consideration, we are looking for our successful candidate to have knowledge of social, economic, political, and historical realities of settler colonialism on Indigenous Peoples and familiarity with addressing Indigenous-specific anti-racism, anti-racism, and Indigenous Cultural Safety and foundational documents and legislative commitments.
