Job Summary

We are seeking a highly skilled Health, Safety, and Environmental (HSE) Manager to join our team at the Site C project in Fort St. John, BC. As a key member of our HSE team, you will be responsible for ensuring the safety and well-being of our employees, contractors, and the environment.

Key Responsibilities

  • Act as the subject matter expert for all general health, safety, and environmental site issues.
  • Ensure the coordination of various tasks during the pre-mobilization, mobilization, commissioning, and demobilization phases of the Site C project.
  • Implement and monitor all local and provincial regulatory requirements, customer frames, prevention, and HSE system plans (Voith and client) and work processes.
  • Develop safe work practices specific to the site by using best practices of other Voith sites.
  • Participate in the development, implementation, and monitoring of safety training programs for Voith site employees and personnel.
  • Ensure that works conducted at site by Voith staff, union workers, and sub-suppliers proceed as per applicable regulations.
  • Establish a climate of collaboration with various parties at site, Voith Hydro representatives, our workers, subcontractors, and client.
  • Act as a resource for managers, supervisors, and site personnel on Health and Safety policies, procedures, and practices.
  • Be proactive in proposing changes to improve existing safety programs.
  • Analyze and provide support to the site on accidents investigations, incidents, or near misses and deliver strong corrective and preventive actions to prevent recurrence.
  • Inspect the facilities, work methods, and workers' behaviors in order to identify areas for improvement and to prevent incidents.
  • Be a leader in Health, Safety, and Environment change of culture.
  • Work in close collaboration with the organization HSE Manager.

Requirements

  • Excellent knowledge of English (French would be considered an asset, but not necessary).
  • Able to lead a large number of union workers.
  • Able to understand HSE procedures and ensure proper use in practice.
  • Autonomy, analytical abilities, team work abilities, and learning skills.
  • Able to build trust with the site team and influence changes through comprehensive risk and safety data assessment.
  • Ability to work a 3-week site rotation living in a newly-constructed construction camp with excellent amenities.

Education and Experience

  • Minimum of eight (8) years working experience on large-scale construction sites as safety professional.
  • Registration with the Board of Registered Safety Professionals (CRSP).
  • Knowledge of hydropower sector.
  • Knowledge of BC and CSA HSE regulations.
  • Knowledge of personal protection equipment on site work (working at height, masks, etc.).
  • Knowledge of required procedures and requirements for silica dust control, lead paint, and asbestos.
  • Expert level knowledge of Certificate of Recognition (COR) requirements.
