The Pharmacy Technician will provide technical support to the Pharmacy Manager and Pharmacist in the Regional Pharmacy Program. The incumbent will be responsible for drug distribution, dispensing, order entry, prepackaging, inventory control, travel, and sterile product preparation.

Key Responsibilities

  1. Procure, store, prepare, compound, package, maintain, issue, and distribute drugs, chemicals, and supplies in accordance with policy, directives, and procedures of the Regional Pharmacy Program.
  2. Review prescriptions for compliance with federal and provincial law.
  3. Perform a final check on prepared drugs before dispensing, as approved by a pharmacist manager.
  4. Dispense drugs upon approval by a pharmacist.
  5. Identify drug-related problems requiring referral to a pharmacist.
  6. Provide instructions to patients on the operation of defined medical devices.
  7. Refill active prescriptions without change, as instructed by a practitioner.
  8. Perform tasks at external dispensing sites.
  9. Precept and train Pharmacy Technicians-in-training, Pharmacists, Pharmacy Technician students, Pharmacy Assistants, and pharmacy interns.
  10. Maintain current competencies underlying main duties of a Pharmacy Technician.
  11. Provide annual records of continuing education requirements to maintain eligibility as a Pharmacy Technician.
  12. Act as a pharmacy information resource for other healthcare professionals within scope.
  13. Participate in quality assurance, quality improvement, and quality control activities.
  14. Assist with collecting required information and maintaining databases.
  15. Maintain current knowledge of Hospital Disaster and Contingency Plans and WHMIS and Workplace Health and Safety requirements.
  16. Adhere to all safety and health regulations and safe work practices.
  17. Perform all duties of a pharmacy assistant.
  18. Other duties as assigned.
