Job Overview

The Salvation Army is seeking a highly skilled and compassionate Day Program Instructor to join our team. As a key member of our program, you will play a vital role in supporting individuals with developmental disabilities, promoting their social skills, life skills, and community participation.

About the Role

We are looking for an experienced professional who can provide direct support to program participants, act as a role model, and foster independence in daily living skills. The ideal candidate will have a strong background in working with adults with developmental disabilities, preferably with dual diagnosis of mental health challenges and developmental disabilities.

Main Responsibilities

  • Act as a role model for the people we support by demonstrating positive behavior and attitude;
  • Foster independence in daily living skills, including social skills, life skills, and community participation;
  • Provide support in personal development through Individual Support Plans (ISPs);
  • Know and respond to the safety and healthcare needs of the people we support;
  • Document and maintain records as required;
  • Administer medication;
  • Maintain effective communication and collaborate with colleagues and stakeholders;
  • Participate in program planning meetings and staff development training;
  • Follow agency policies and procedures, including legislation associated with the program.

Requirements and Qualifications

  • Diploma or degree in Developmental Services Worker (DSW) or related field;
  • Proficient computer skills in Microsoft Office and email;
  • Valid Ontario Class G Driver's License and a current copy of a Driver's abstract for review;
  • Ability to be certified in Standard First Aid/CPR and NCI;
  • Preferred experience working with adults with developmental disabilities and dual diagnosis.

Working Conditions

  • Exposure to dirt, bodily fluids, and odors;
  • Noisy work environment;
  • Dealing with angry and abusive individuals;
  • Handling garbage and other physical demands.

Salary: $30-$40 per hour, depending on experience and qualifications.
