Clinical Service Director

We are seeking a highly skilled and experienced medical professional to fill the role of Hospitalist Department Head within our organization. As a key member of our leadership team, you will be responsible for providing strategic and operational planning and service leadership for the zone department.
Reporting to the Zone Medical Executive Director, you will work in a co-leadership model with an Administrative Co-Lead to ensure the effective functioning of the department. Your responsibilities will include:
Key Responsibilities- Administrative Functioning: Hold responsibility for the administrative functioning of the department, including holding regular department meetings and providing meeting minutes to the Zone Medical Executive Director.
- Service Continuity: Work with Hospitalist Site Leads, Medical Site Leads, and operational leadership to ensure service continuity is maintained through the department and key patient flow objectives are met.
- Quality of Care: Advise the Zone Medical Advisory Committee on the quality of care and treatment provided to patients within the zone department.
- Teaching and Research: Advise the Zone Medical Advisory Committee on the fulfillment of teaching and research responsibilities within the zone department.
- Objectives and Planning: Participate in developing, reporting on, and overseeing the zone department's objectives, planning, budgeting, resource allocation, and utilization.
- Physician Resource Needs: Make recommendations on physician resource needs of the zone department, including the number and type of physicians needed, after consulting with the Zone Medical Executive Director, the VP Medicine, and the Medical Site Leads.
- Clinical and Academic Activities: Hold responsibility for organizing and implementing the clinical and academic activities of the department, ensuring overall alignment and support of NSHA organization and system priorities.
- Access and Flow: Work with the co-lead to develop and implement a plan focused on improving access and flow for the zone, including community hospitals and cross-facility transfers.
- Professional Standards: Ensure the continual maintenance and enforcement of professional standards within the department and implement quality assurance and improvement within the zone department.
- Medical Staff Issues: Address and resolve medical staff issues, including those involving respectful workplace and interpersonal matters, and oversee complaint and discipline management for all department members.
- Committee Meetings: Attend relevant committee meetings as assigned by the Medical Executive Director.
- Co-Leadership: Provide co-leadership along with the Zone Administrative Director of the zone department for strategic and operational planning and budgeting.
- Performance Management: Monitor the performance and effectiveness of medical staff members of the zone department and act on issues identified as required.
- Annual Performance Review: At least annually, review the performance of zone department members and provide performance management where required.
- Medical Students and Residents: Coordinate medical students and residents in the Zone, including the supervision of residents' education requirements where applicable.
- Research Agenda: Support the research agenda within the department.
- Clinical Services Planning: Participate in any clinical services planning for the Zone/NSHA.
- Recruitment and Retention: Work collaboratively with the ZMED and Medical Site Leads to lead recruitment and retention for the department for the Zone, ensuring that new hire and onboarding processes are completed with support from the Specialty Site Lead as required.
- Leadership Development: Participate in leadership development.
- Medical Degree: MD, licensable in Nova Scotia.
- Experience: 3-5 years' experience as a medical department member with experience engaging, mentoring, and empowering teams and stakeholders in a collaborative, participative manner.
