Distribution Systems Engineering Lead

This role is responsible for providing strategic and tactical advice on the operation of the distribution system. The ideal candidate will have a deep understanding of reliability and economic optimization of operating configurations, as well as experience with load flows, circuit loadings, and equipment ratings.

The Distribution Systems Engineering Lead will provide technical direction in the development of station engineering design standards and equipment purchasing specifications. This will involve working closely with the control room, stations staff, and reliability field staff to ensure accurate and well-understood system conditions.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Oversee the development and implementation of major capital projects
  • Provide input into required capital programs for reliability and constraint mitigation
  • Conduct failure investigations and produce reports
  • Analyze outage information to determine root cause and ramifications on classes of assets
  • Assess system performance and support performance reporting activities
  • Support the generation of reliability index information
  • Develop and document substation and distribution system contingency plans
  • Identify constraints within the system
  • Allocate new load to appropriate circuits
  • Perform protection coordination studies initiated by stations upgrades or coordination failures
  • Conduct short circuit calculations and load flows for system optimization, including voltage profiles
  • Assess the impact of distributed energy resources connections on the distribution system
  • Ensure accurate capture of system loads and equipment ratings
  • Provide input during the development of technical engineering standards
  • Represent Hydro Ottawa at external working groups and conferences

Requirements:

  • Professional Engineer, licensed or able to be licensed in the province of Ontario
  • Undergraduate degree in Engineering from an accredited university
  • Experience in a utility environment is considered an asset
  • Project Management and System Planning experience is considered an asset
  • Experience with Asset Management models is beneficial
  • Knowledge of ISO55000 is considered an asset
  • Strong computer skills, proficient in the use of office productivity and collaboration tools
