Strategic Communications Manager

Job Summary

The Government of Nunavut is seeking a highly skilled Strategic Communications Manager to lead the Communications Unit. As a key member of the Department of Education, the successful candidate will play a critical role in developing and implementing a comprehensive communication strategy that aligns with the department's policies and priorities.

Key Responsibilities

  • Provide strategic leadership and advice on all departmental communications, ensuring consistency with the department and Government of Nunavut's requirements.
  • Oversee the development, implementation, and evaluation of an overall communication strategy, including reviewing all public communications for consistency and accuracy.
  • Manage the unit's annual budget and lead a team of two direct reports, including the Senior Communications Advisor and Communications Officer.
  • Develop and maintain in-depth knowledge of public and media relations, strategic communications policy and planning, and marketing theory to inform communication decisions.
  • Collaborate with stakeholders to identify communication needs and develop targeted communication plans to meet those needs.

Requirements

  • Recognized undergraduate degree in Communications, Journalism, Business, Public Administration, or a related field.
  • Three years of related experience in communications planning in a large organization or government setting.
  • Experience working with legislation, policies, and guidelines related to strategic communications.
  • Excellent written, verbal, and listening communication skills, with the ability to strategically plan and review internal and external communications.
  • Fluency in more than one of Nunavut's official languages (Inuktut, English, French) is considered an asset.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master's degree in a related field.
  • Knowledge of Inuit communities, culture, land, Inuit Qaujimajatuqangit, Inuktut, and experience working in a northern cross-cultural environment.
