Senior Estimator for Large-Scale Infrastructure Projects

We are seeking a highly experienced Senior Estimator to join our team in Vancouver BC, Toronto ON, and Calgary AB. The successful candidate will work on large infrastructure projects with budgets over $100 million.
Salary: $90,000 - $180,000 per year
Job DescriptionThe Senior Estimator will be responsible for reviewing project plans and specifications, conducting site visits, and establishing construction costs for some of the industry's most challenging projects. Using detailed construction analysis and historical costs, the estimator will prepare comprehensive cost estimates and supporting data (schedules, material and subcontract price comparison, rate build-up, etc.) for direct and indirect costs to accurately determine the cost of construction.
Responsibilities- Preliminary Budgeting: Prepare Order of Magnitude (OOM) Budgets based on Reference/Indicative Documents.
- Cost Management: Set-up Cost Work Break-Down Structures (WBS) for complex heavy civil/transportation projects.
- Quantity Take-offs: Perform Quantity Take-offs and assemble Bill of Quantities (BoQ's) documents.
- Direct Cost Estimates: Develop direct cost estimates based on project specifications, drawings, and addenda.
- Indirect Cost Estimates: Prepare general accounts/indirect cost estimates.
- Unit Rates: Develop cost unit rates from basic principles by making use of labour, equipment, and material resources.
- Labor Unit Rates: Generate Labour unit rates in compliance with the labour wage requirements of project locations.
- Budget Updates: Prepare and update complete construction budgets as projects design progresses.
- Tender Presentations: Prepare construction budget review presentations for management.
- Collaboration: Coordinate and lead Estimating Working Group meetings with CJV partners.
- Alternate Pricing: Generate alternate price for value engineering scope elements for the projects.
- Tender Summaries: Prepare tender summary sheets and cash flows.
- Design Workshops: Participate in design workshops during the project's design development in order to provide cost/construction input.
- Subcontractor Management: Source, liaise with, and manage best value subcontractors and suppliers, collaborating with the Procurement team.
- Compliance: Ensure subcontractors are in compliance with AIC operational and technical requirements.
- Procurement Packages: Identify and set-up subcontractors/vendor's packages for the procurement team.
- Quote Analysis: Analyze subcontractors/vendors quotes and prepare comparison sheets.
- Estimate Updates: Update estimate based on analysed pricing received from the local market.
- Bid Documents: Ensure bid bond, insurance, and other required documents are in place.
- Accumulation of Data: Accumulate, evaluate, and document historical cost data.
- Document Organization: Organize and prepare bid close documents.
- Accuracy Assessment: Provide assessment of estimating accuracy and prepare relevant analyses.
- Cost Estimation: The Estimator will prepare cost estimates for materials, labor, and equipment for construction projects based on contract bids, quotations, drawings, and specifications.
- Tender Examination: Follow established tendering procedures, examine and analyze tenders.
- Tender Practices: Establish and maintain tendering practices.
- Supplier Directory: Prepare and maintain a directory of suppliers, contractors, and subcontractors.
- Estimating Accuracy: Provide assessment of estimating accuracy and prepare relevant analyses.
- Contract Knowledge: Working knowledge of contract language and legal requirements of contracts.
- Technical Skills: Excellent technical, organizational, and planning skills.
- Communication: Strong interpersonal, relationship building, communication, and negotiation skills.
- Attention to Detail: Solid attention to detail and ability to be a problem solver.
- Teamwork: Ability to work independently or as a member of a team.
- Time Management: Estimator has the ability to work on large ($500+million) project estimates, with proven time management skills.
- Work Ethic: Strong work ethic to complete tasks in a high-quality manner.
- Software Proficiency: Working knowledge of Estimating and Quantity Take-Off software's.
- Estimating Techniques: General knowledge of estimating techniques, cost control, and material pricing required.
- Mathematical Extensions: Ability to calculate mathematical extensions, read and understand engineering drawings, purchase orders, contracts, cost coding systems, etc. is essential.
- Interpersonal Skills: Ability to assume responsibility and to interface and communicate effectively with others, have strong interpersonal skills and be self-motivated.
- Innovative Thinking: Enthusiasm for challenge and new initiatives are prerequisites.
- Progressive Experience: 5-10 years of progressive experience in field engineering and/or as an Estimator on complex heavy civil transportation, technical structures, roadways, and other civil works is desired. Large project ($300M+) experience is a plus.
- Civil Engineering Degree: A Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering or Construction Management.
- Database Estimating Software: Competence in creating a complete bid price using construction database estimating software and expert use of MS Excel essential.
- CAD and Digital Take-off Programs: Use of CAD, digital take-off programs, and a strong proficiency in Microsoft Office an advantage.
- Preliminary Scheduling: Experience in creating preliminary construction schedules.
- Joint Venture Environment: Experience in working in multi-joint venture environment.
- Disciplined Environment: Comfortable working in a disciplined and challenging environment.
- P3 Project Experience: Previous P3 project experience an advantage.
