Job Summary

Circle of Care is seeking a highly skilled and dedicated Recreation Therapist to join our team at the Adult Day Program in Maple. As a Recreation Therapist, you will contribute to recreation planning and conduct recreation activities with groups at the Day Centre. You will also organize and promote research and evidence-based programs, taking into account the needs and interests of our clients.

Responsibilities

Recreation Facilities

  • Ensure the effective and safe operation of Day Centre facilities
  • Assist in the preparation and development of monthly calendars and letters
  • Ensure policies and regulations are adhered to
  • Monitor the use of recreation equipment and facilities
  • Work effectively with all staff at the Day Centre to ensure the safety and well-being of our clients

Recreation Programs Development

  • Develop, implement, and evaluate evidence-based programs for clients at the Day Centre
  • Perform ongoing evaluation of program effectiveness and adjust as needed
  • Schedule programs, entertainment, students, and volunteers as required
  • Supervise volunteers and students as needed

Inventory Control and Related Duties

  • Oversee the purchase, planning, design, construction, and upkeep of recreation facilities and areas
  • Explain principles, techniques, and safety procedures to participants in recreational activities and demonstrate use of materials and equipment

Team Building and Leadership

  • Participate in team initiatives and meetings
  • Communicate, collaborate, and lead by example to build support for agency vision and departmental goals
  • Build rapport with team members to ensure a high-performing team
  • Highlight the connection between overall strategy and daily activities
  • Act as a change agent to positively encourage others and manage change

Risk, Health, and Safety Management

  • Identify and report health and safety incidents and concerns in a timely manner
  • Participate in health and safety processes and procedures
  • Maintain a safe workplace environment by cultivating a positive safety culture and encouraging best practices
  • Participate in all health and safety training initiatives
  • Take proactive action against client incidents within your scope of practice
  • Develop a plan to identify, manage, and minimize client safety risks or situations
  • Assess the severity of adverse client safety/risk events and determine the best follow-up and action plan
  • Call emergency services when necessary
  • Evaluate potential hazards and identify clients at risk for adverse health and safety events
  • Report all safety events in a timely and honest disclosure

Qualifications

  • Degree in Recreation Therapy or completion of two years of community college in Recreation Therapy
  • Demonstrates sound work ethics and dedication
  • Professional member in good standing with Therapeutic Recreation Ontario (TRO)
  • Basic Cardiac Life Support Certified
  • U-First training an asset
  • Experience working with frail and impaired elderly and their families
  • Experience working with seniors who have Alzheimer's disease and dementia
  • Experience in recreational programming for seniors
  • Intermediate computer and writing skills, including Word, Excel, PowerPoint
  • Clear communication skills
  • Experience working as part of an interdisciplinary team
  • Current CPR training an asset
  • Able to work occasional evenings on a rotational basis
