Job Summary
Circle of Care is seeking a highly skilled Recreation Therapist to join our team at the Adult Day Program in Maple. As a Recreation Therapist, you will contribute to recreation planning and conduct recreation activities with groups at the Day Centre. You will also organize and promote evidence-based programs, taking into account the needs and interests of our clients.
Key Responsibilities
- Ensure the effective operation and maintenance of Day Centre facilities
- Assist in the preparation and development of monthly calendars/letters
- Ensure policies and regulations are adhered to
- Monitor the use of recreation equipment and facilities
- Work effectively with all staff at the Day Centre to ensure the safety and well-being of our clients
Program Development
- Responsible for researching, developing, implementing, and evaluating evidence-based programs for clients at the Day Centre
- Perform ongoing evaluation of the effectiveness of programs and adjust program areas as needed
- Responsible for scheduling programs, entertainment, students, and volunteers as required
- Responsible for orienting and supervising volunteers and students as needed
Inventory Control and Related Duties
- Responsible for overseeing the purchase, planning, design, construction, and upkeep of recreation facilities and areas
- Explain principles, techniques, and safety procedures to participants in recreational activities and demonstrate the use of materials and equipment
Team Building and Leadership
- Actively participate in team initiatives and meetings
- Build support for agency vision and departmental goals/objectives by communicating, collaborating, and leading by example
- Build rapport with team members to ensure a high-performing team
- Look for daily opportunities to highlight the connection between overall strategy and day-to-day activities
- Act as a change agent to positively encourage others and manage change
Risk, Health, and Safety Management
- Identify and report health and safety incidents and concerns in a timely manner to the appropriate supervisors and/or funders
- Participate in health and safety processes and procedures
- Participate in maintaining a safe workplace environment by cultivating a positive safety culture and encouraging best practices to promote both staff and client safety and well-being
- Participate in all health and safety training initiatives on a regular basis
- Take proactive action against client incidents within your scope of practice
- Develop a plan to identify, manage, and/or minimize client safety risks or situations in adherence with risk management operations policies
- Assess the severity of an adverse client safety/risk event and determine the best follow-up and develop an action plan following the event
- Collaborate with funders (e.g., HCCSS) and follow any additional processes as required
- Call emergency services (911) when the client is at an immediate risk of harming themselves or others, or if there is a serious injury and/or imminent harm
- Evaluate any potential hazards and identify clients at risk for adverse health and safety events, taking preventative measures when necessary to minimize reoccurrence
- Report all safety events impacting clients, caregivers, and families in a timely and honest disclosure
Qualifications
- A degree in Recreation Therapy or completion of two (2) years of community college in Recreation Therapy
- Demonstrate sound work ethics and dedication
- Professional member in good standing with Therapeutic Recreation Ontario (TRO)
- Basic Cardiac Life Support Certified
- U-First training an asset
- Experience working with frail and impaired elderly and their families
- Experience working with seniors who have Alzheimer's disease and dementia
- Experience in recreational programming for seniors
- Intermediate computer and writing skills, including Word, Excel, PowerPoint
- Clear communication skills
- Experience working as part of an interdisciplinary team
- Current CPR training would be an asset
- Able to work occasional evenings on a rotational basis
