Oncology General Practitioner

The Nova Scotia Health Authority Cancer Care Program is seeking a General Practitioner in Oncology to join our dynamic interdisciplinary team. As a GPO, you will work in collaboration with oncology specialists, consulting with members of other health professions within the Eastern Zone and provincially as appropriate. You will be accountable to the Nova Scotia Health Authority Cancer Care Program Senior Medical Director and the Executive Medical Director in your respective zone for professional matters and scope of practice.
Responsibilities- Provide outpatient care to cancer patients in various clinical settings, including oncology clinics, chemotherapy units, and virtual care clinics.
- Assist in the accelerated workup of suspected cancer cases.
- Manage cancer symptoms and treatment-related adverse effects in collaboration with the specialist and healthcare team.
- Assist in the management of patients undergoing local therapies for cancer, including radiotherapy and intra-vesicular therapy.
- Provide follow-up assessments and examinations for cancer patients undergoing surveillance.
- Notify the specialist of changes in the patient's condition.
- Provide on-site support as needed.
- Be available and responsible for providing urgent coverage for cancer systemic therapy infusion reactions.
- Be available during working hours to address questions related to patient care and assist with treatment.
- Arrange coverage and handover with covering physicians for absences.
- Participate in oncology-related meetings and continuing medical education.
- Adhere to NSHA Cancer Care Program guidelines and policies to ensure expected standards of care are achieved.
- Participate in medical practice that is compatible with the Nova Scotia Health Authority's mission, values, and strategic directions.
- Provide local academic and clinical leadership related to the care of cancer patients.
- Participate on Nova Scotia Cancer Care Program initiatives and committees.
- Part-time hours (0.5 FTE)
- Patient load is variable.
- Candidates must be eligible for certification by the College of Family Physicians of Canada.
- Must be eligible for licensure with the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Nova Scotia.
- Must maintain active Canadian Medical Protective Association coverage and have active hospital privileges at their designated site.
Other competencies include previous oncology training and experience, completion of GPO orientation, and commitment to ongoing professional education through attendance at educational conferences and other oncology-related learning opportunities.
