Sign Language Interpreter

Job Summary:
The Langara College is seeking a qualified Interpreter (Casual) to provide high-quality visual communication services to students in a post-secondary setting. The successful candidate will interpret classroom lectures, campus events, and other assignments as directed by the Manager, Disability Services.
Key Responsibilities:
• Interpret classroom lectures, campus events, and other assignments in American Sign Language (ASL) and/or oral interpretation and English
• Provide linguistic match with the student's need in ASL or Contact sign (Signed English)
• Demonstrate skill in a wide spectrum of ASL/English vocabulary choices to match student need
• Ability to provide clear articulation congruently with nonverbal support techniques when appropriate (applies to oral interpretation)
• Ability to quickly establish effective working relationships with students and members of the educational team
• Ability to adapt to changing situations
• Ability to organize and prioritize workload
• Ability to work independently and as a member of a team
Qualifications:
• Completion of Grade 12 and graduation from a recognized Interpreter Training Program (ITP)
• AVLIC Written Test of Knowledge (WTK), required
• Four (4) years of recent related experience interpreting in American Sign Language (ASL) and/or oral interpretation and English in an educational setting
• Post-Secondary Sign Language Screen preferred (applies to sign language assignments)
• Minimum 90 hours of Oral Training (applies to oral assignments)
• An equivalent combination of experience and education may be considered
• Completion of a post-secondary certificate, diploma, or degree, preferred
• Experience working within an educational team and interpreting in a "teamed setting"
• Membership in AVLIC and the West Coast Association of Visual Language Interpreters (WAVLI) preferred
Working Conditions:
The successful candidate will work in a fast-paced educational environment and will be required to work independently and as a member of a team. The candidate will be required to adapt to changing situations and prioritize workload accordingly.
