Sign Language Interpreter

Vancouver Community College is seeking a highly skilled Sign Language Interpreter to join our team. As a Sign Language Interpreter, you will play a critical role in ensuring that Deaf, hard of hearing, and Deaf-blind students have equal access to education.
Key Responsibilities:- Provide interpretation services during lectures, labs, tests, field trips, and other educational activities.
- Explain the interpreter's role to administrators, instructors, and staff.
- Utilize student feedback to make necessary adjustments to interpretation services.
- Obtain preparatory materials to prepare for assignments.
- Demonstrate professional boundaries and good interpersonal skills with students and staff.
- Maintain cooperative relationships with students, interpreters, and college community members.
- Provide insight on communication strategies to the Interpreting Services Department Supervisor and other team members.
- Assist the Interpreting Services Department Supervisor with departmental duties.
- Completion of Grade 12 plus graduation from a recognized Interpreter Training Program.
- At least three years' experience in interpreting American Sign Language (ASL) in an educational setting.
- Membership in the Westcoast Association of Visual Language Interpreters (WAVLI) is required.
- Excellent sign language skills to provide an effective linguistic match for Deaf-Blind, hard of hearing, and Deaf students.
- Knowledge and appreciation of Deaf culture and issues facing Deaf, hard of hearing, and Deaf-blind students.
- Clear understanding of consecutive and simultaneous interpretation, ethics, history, and best practices in the field.
- Good interpersonal skills with the ability to work independently and collaboratively as a member of a team.
- Strong time management and organizational skills.
