Child Welfare Advocate

The Children's Aid Society of the District of Thunder Bay is seeking a skilled Child Welfare Advocate to join our team as a Family Support Specialist. This role involves providing protection and counselling services to families and children, including placing and supporting children in alternative care settings when indicated by safety assessments.
About the Role
In this challenging yet rewarding position, you will undertake family and individual assessments, develop partnerships in the community, and collaborate with other social services in a community-based model of service. You will also prepare reports, correspondence, and documents for internal and external use, including legal matters. As a key member of our team, you will participate in case conferences, staff meetings, and professional development opportunities both within and outside the agency. Additionally, you will travel within the region to meet the needs of families and services.
Key Responsibilities
- Provide protection and counseling services to families and children, including placing and supporting children in alternative care settings when indicated by safety assessments.
- Undertake family and individual assessments to identify needs and develop effective support plans.
- Develop partnerships in the community and collaborate with other social services in a community-based model of service.
- Prepare reports, correspondence, and documents for internal and external use, including legal matters.
- Participate in case conferences, staff meetings, and professional development opportunities both within and outside the agency.
- Travel within the region to meet the needs of families and services.
Requirements
To be successful in this role, you will require a Bachelor's degree in a related field, such as Social Work or a combination of education and experience. A strong understanding of child welfare principles and practices, as well as excellent communication and interpersonal skills, are essential. You will also need to demonstrate a commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion, with a focus on eliminating disparity and disproportionality in service outcomes. Additionally, you must have a valid driver's license, reliable vehicle, and a safe driving record.
Salary and Benefits
We offer a competitive salary range of $60,000-$80,000 per year, depending on experience. Our comprehensive benefits package includes health, dental, and vision coverage, as well as a pension plan and paid time off.
