The role of an Associate Machine Learning Developer involves working on public sector ML projects, delivering real-world solutions to our partners, including Service Alberta and other government departments. Our mission at GovLab AI is to set a global example of transforming the public sector through applied AI, promoting growth in high-demand machine learning and AI skill sets across Alberta and worldwide.

This 4-month paid internship offers hands-on experience, preparing participants for professional success. During the program, you will be part of a team working on specific use cases identified by our Public Sector Partners. You will gain experience with multiple tools, explore various AI/ML and data processing fields, and receive resources and mentorship for career advancement. The teams will be led by the Project Delivery Manager using AltaML methodology to create working models for viable use cases and guide teams in implementing solutions with our Partners.

About the Opportunity:
This role is funded in partnership with Mitacs and is open to students currently enrolled at the University of Alberta, University of Calgary (Masters Only), Mount Royal University, University of Waterloo, University of Toronto, or Queen's University. The position requires occasional work out of one of our offices in Edmonton, Calgary, Toronto, and/or Waterloo.

What You'll Do:

- Participate in team planning sessions and educational presentations

- Review data to understand its scope and structure

- Identify the right metric to measure model and project success

- Work in teams to pre-process data for analysis and model development

- Uncover trends, insights, and key features to guide where ML solutions can be applied

- Develop models around available data and suggested problem sets

- For viable use cases, develop proof-of-concept working models

- Suggest and explore novel solutions to problems and detailed recommendations for integrating models in business

- Communicate and present your team's work to AltaML and Public Sector Partners

- Gain familiarity with various data processing tools and exposure to AI/ML algorithms

- Independently research and connect with your cohort to gain domain knowledge and learn state-of-the-art techniques
