Job Description

The Laboratory Animal Sciences (LAS) team works under the direct supervision of the Executive Director of Lab Animal Sciences and general guidance of senior staff. As a Veterinary Technician, you will assist veterinary staff in documenting and providing clinical care for laboratory animal health cases. Our goal is to collaborate with research scientists to discover, characterize, and develop novel therapeutic products for various human diseases.

This role requires effective communication with veterinary staff and Study Directors regarding animal issues. You will monitor animal health by performing rounds, responding to reports, and following schedules. Additionally, you will maintain accurate medical records for each animal, adhering to study and regulatory requirements.

Responsibilities

  1. Assist veterinary staff in documenting and providing clinical care for laboratory animal health cases identified by technical staff and/or veterinarians.
  2. Monitor animal health by performing rounds, responding to reports, and following schedules.
  3. Consult with veterinarians and veterinary staff on treatment options and generate animal treatment records.
  4. Perform routine veterinary technical and husbandry skills, including handling and restraining animals, administering medications, verifying drugs/medications, and monitoring critical care animals.

Required Skills and Qualifications

  • Veterinary Technology Degree or equivalent degree preferred.
  • AALAS Certifications preferred.
  • 0-2 years of related experience working with animals in a pre-clinical laboratory or clinical setting; experience working with multi-species preferred.

Physical Requirements

  • Physical dexterity to lift 50-100 pounds in weight.
  • Manual dexterity to operate facility equipment.
  • Visual acuity to handle potentially hazardous chemicals, cleaners, biologics, and/or sharps.
