We are seeking a highly skilled Fire Inspector to join our team at Halifax Regional Municipality. As a Fire Inspector, you will play a critical role in ensuring the safety of our community by conducting building inspections and enforcing fire safety regulations.
Key Responsibilities- Conduct thorough building inspections to ensure compliance with the Nova Scotia Fire Safety Act and Regulations, as well as various Municipal By-laws.
- Identify and report on inaccuracies in property data, and respond to complaints or concerns from the public and internal staff.
- Maintain accurate and detailed records of all activities, and document evidence files for legal proceedings.
- Enforce operational guidelines, occupational health and safety standards, rules, regulations, policies, systems, and procedures for safe and efficient fire prevention operations.
- Review and coordinate the development of operational policies and guidelines, and recommend changes or additions as necessary.
- Maintain regulatory appointments, including Municipal Fire Inspector, Local Assistant, and Special Constable.
- Inform building owners of non-compliant conditions and take necessary actions to achieve compliance.
- Assist in the mentorship and guidance of junior positions, and prepare long-form prosecution referrals.
- Remain current in all regulatory and technical construction standards, and be responsible for health and safety under the Internal Responsibility System (IRS).
- Review tender documents for compliance with Orders to Remedy required under the Fire Safety Act, and prepare Orders or Notices as required.
- Provide expert opinion and/or testimony at quasi-judicial hearings or pursuant to Part 15 of the HRM Charter.
- Research NFC, NBC, and manufacturers' reference documents, including CSA, NFPA, CCMC, ULC, CGSB, etc.
- Level 2 Fire Inspector Certification or Level 2 Building Official Diploma of Qualification, and ability to obtain Level 2 Fire Inspector Certification.
- Minimum five (5) years' relevant experience administering a Fire Safety Act and Regulations, Building Code Act and Regulations, and/or equivalent legislation.
- An equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered.
- Must be able to demonstrate capacity and competency to inspect all buildings, structures, facilities, and occupancies by the National Building Code of Canada and National Fire Code of Canada.
- Valid driver's license.
- Considerable experience inspecting complex buildings, such as high-rise or industrial buildings, is considered an asset.
- Detailed knowledge of the HRM Charter, Nova Scotia Building and Fire Codes, Nova Scotia Fire Safety Act, HRM By-laws M200, O109, F100, and B400.
- Sound knowledge and understanding of common law principles, including precedents resulting from Court and Regulatory Body decisions.
- Knowledge of associated construction approval departments and agencies, as well as their related procedures and regulations.
- Knowledge of business-related software and technology, including spreadsheets, databases, word processing, email, etc.

Hours of WorkMonday - Friday, 40 hours per week.
Salary$93,203. annual as per IAFF Local 268 Collective Agreement - 85% of a 1st Class Firefighter.
Work LocationMellor Avenue, Dartmouth - with ability to travel in company vehicle.
