The Opportunity

Corporate Facilities provides the City of Barrie with expertise in four key service areas: facility planning, design and construction; maintenance and property management, facility asset management and energy management. As a Centre of Excellence for a large and complex inventory of physical assets, the department comprises all the necessary functions and lines of business to ensure the full life-cycle management of the City of Barrie's facility and property portfolios. Under the general guidance and direction of the Facility Supervisor –Technical Services, the Senior Facility Services Technician position is responsible for the comprehensive maintenance, inspection and repair the City of Barrie's corporate facilities. Specifically, this position performs maintenance and responds to, troubleshoots and performs preventative, routine and emergency repair or replacement, including significant repairs on various facilities including the Surface Water Treatment Plant, Wastewater Treatment Facility, Landfill, Marina, City Hall, Libraries, Police and Fire Facilities on infrastructure, structures, equipment and systems such as boilers, roof top units, electrical and plumbing systems. Overall, this position plays an integral role in ensuring corporate facilities remain operational by maintaining and achieving maintenance goals, minimizing interruptions and maximizing operational efficiencies.

  • Secondary School Diploma
  • Completion of a relevant Trade Certificate of Qualification as outlined by the Ontario College of Trades/Ministry of Training, Colleges and Universities, such as: Industrial Electrician, Plumber, Refrigeration and Air Conditioning Systems Mechanic, Facilities Mechanic, Industrial Mechanic, Millwright

Experience

  • Five (5) years of experience performing duties related to the major responsibilities of the position
  • Demonstrated experience in a complex, multi-facility work environment
  • Demonstrated experience using maintenance tools and equipment
  • Demonstrated experience troubleshooting and maintaining HVAC systems, electrical, plumbing, fire/life safety, structural, roof systems, and door hardware

Knowledge/Skill/Ability

  • Working knowledge of the following legislation, regulations, or requirements: Accessibility for Ontarians with Disabilities Act (AODA); Municipal Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy Act (MFIPPA); Occupational Health and Safety Act (OHSA); Electrical Safety Authority (ESA) requirements; Technical Standards and Safety Authority (TSSA) requirements; Building, fire and public health codes; Asset management principles; Quality assurance standards
  • Working knowledge of the best practices for tool/equipment safety, mechanical techniques and material handling
  • Demonstrated ability to: read and interpret mechanical/electrical schematics and specifications, building codes and architectural drawings work in a complex, fast-paced environment with changing priorities set priorities, meet deadlines and deal with conflicting priorities and work demands work independently with minimal supervision maintain a high standard of public relations at all times
  • Intermediate skills include: Analytical; Customer Service; Interpersonal; Teamwork; Written Communication
  • Basic computer literacy using the following systems and software: Microsoft Office Suite (Excel, Outlook, Word), Building Automated Systems (BAS), and computerized maintenance management system (CMMS) software
  • Availability to work outside of schedule work hours to perform standby, overtime, or emergency response duties

Conditions of Employment

  • Valid Ontario Class "G" Driver's Licence in good standing
