The Asphalt Raker Labourer uses proficient skills and techniques to redistribute the asphalt mix correctly as it leaves the screed and prepares it for rolling.

Main Responsibilities:

  • Assess road conditions and job requirements accurately.
  • Apply efficient spreading techniques using a rake to maintain a good pace.
  • Ensure proper hand raking of longitudinal seams and transverse joints to achieve a smooth surface with minimal segregation.
  • Remove excess asphalt and clean up debris effectively.
  • Responsible for the proper match points and limits of asphalt mix adjacent to concrete structures, manholes, water valves, and other fixtures within the road surface.
  • Blend and level any seams in the mat using an asphalt rake, reducing visible marks and seams in the asphalt surface.
  • Measure the width of the road using a measuring tape and string line the boundaries of the road surface as a guide for the paver.
  • Support the screed operator in distributing asphalt materials evenly over the road surface.
  • Determine and adjust the angle and depth of the asphalt screed as required.
  • Signal operators of construction equipment to facilitate alignment and movement of materials efficiently.
  • Ensure the worksite remains organized and free of clutter, rubble, and garbage.
  • Shovel asphalt mix into inaccessible areas using rakes and hand tampers.
  • Perform various manual labor tasks, including the use of power and hand tools.
  • Complete other general labor tasks, such as site cleaning and preparation.
  • Operate equipment like pneumatic hammers, vibrators, tampers, and skid steers as needed.

Essential Skills and Qualifications

Work Experience

  • Minimum 1-5 years of experience in road construction.
  • Minimum 1-3 years of experience as an Asphalt Raker Labourer.

Technical Competencies

  • Understanding of asphalt raking techniques.
  • Familiarity with road paving construction methods and road construction materials.

Working Environment

  • May require travel.
  • Overtime may be necessary.
  • Personal protective equipment must be used.
  • Compliance with the company's drug and alcohol policy, including testing requirements.
  • Adherence to all company policies.
  • Must perform duties safely around mobile equipment and demonstrate a high sense of safety awareness while working on roads.
  • Use of sunscreen, long sleeves, and appropriate headgear is recommended.
  • Physically able to repetitively lift and carry at least 50lbs regularly.
  • Work is performed outdoors, exposing workers to various weather conditions, heat, humidity, dust, and asphalt.
