Urban Planning Coordinator

The Urban Planning Coordinator position is a key member of the Complete Neighborhoods / Area Planning team within Community Planning; Long-Range and Strategic Planning. The role will support a variety of area planning activities, with initial focus on the Rupert and Renfrew Station Area Plan process currently underway. A core component of the role will involve undertaking research, assisting with public consultation, developing information graphics to communicate complex ideas, and collecting and analyzing information. Other community and area planning activities (technical analysis, policy development, policy implementation) will also be part of the work program.
Key Contacts and Reporting RelationshipsThis position reports to a Senior Planner in Community Planning, with direct supervision from a Planner II.
Specific Duties/Responsibilities- Public Engagement - Organizing workshops, public open houses, and other consultation events; assisting with the preparation of supporting materials such as presentation boards and materials, informational graphics, presentations, bulletins, newsletters, and advertising content; managing stakeholder contacts and mailing lists.
- Research - Researching, mapping, and analyzing data on various neighborhood planning topics; assessing results and communicating key findings.
- Communications - Graphics and visual communication; creating diagrams to synthesize info, document layout, maintaining and updating various project websites, responding to and tracking emails and other correspondence, and social media outreach.
- Supporting Policy Process - Assisting with matters related to the creation and implementation of planning policy, including land use and urban design directions, and other topics relevant to complete neighborhoods.
- Other related duties as assigned.
Education and Experience:
- Minimum requirement: completion of the twelfth school grade or equivalent in a technical or vocational school, supplemented by or including courses in graphics, community engagement, GIS, or other related courses.
- Previous experience as a Planning Assistant I (or related role) is preferred or any equivalent combination of training and experience.
- Post-secondary degree in Planning or related discipline is preferred.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
- Applicants must have strong interpersonal and communications skills (written, graphic, and verbal)
- Sound research and analytical abilities and an aptitude for the technical aspects of planning work.
- A good working knowledge of Microsoft Office and graphics programs (e.g., Adobe Creative Suite) is required, and familiarity with GIS (ArcGIS) 3D modelling software (e.g. SketchUp) is an asset.
- Ability to both work independently and participate successfully on work teams, and to complete assignments using sound professional techniques and judgment.
- Ability to self-manage workload and meet time demands (e.g., prioritize tasks, communicate expected time frames for the delivery of items with staff and request help when needed) is a requirement.
- Ability to occasionally work outside typical business hours to accommodate meetings and consultation initiatives.
- Ability to meet transportation requirements.
- Knowledge of a language other than English is an asset.
Where operationally appropriate and subject to change, the City of Vancouver has a Flexible Work Program. This program allows staff to work remotely 1 - 4 days a week from locations that are a daily commutable distance from their work at a City worksite. At this time this position is eligible to be part of the Flexible Work Program.
