Main Responsibilities

The City of Vancouver is seeking a skilled Urban Planning Specialist to join our Planning, Urban Design and Sustainability department. As a key member of our team, you will play a crucial role in implementing the Vancouver Plan, including the development of a city-wide official development plan and area plans.

Key Duties and Responsibilities

  • Scope, prepare and manage project work plans, ensuring timely delivery of results.
  • Manage projects of various scales, including policy review and plan implementation, monitoring plan goals and development activity.
  • Draft policy amendments and guidelines to implement and/or update city-wide or community plans.
  • Collaborate with internal stakeholders to advance community plans and city-wide policy goals through participation on technical teams, supporting master plan scoping and engagement, and preparing background materials for project phases.
  • Establish and maintain collaborative relationships with community organizations, residents, property owners, developers, architects, agencies, and other stakeholders.
  • Communicate effectively through report writing, presentations to staff, management, City Council, and the public.
  • Design and attend public engagement activities, including community forums, workshops, and meetings.
Qualifications

To be successful in this role, you will require:

  • A university graduate degree in planning or a related discipline, recognized by the Canadian Institute of Planners, and a minimum of two years of professional experience in the planning field, preferably supplemented by supervisory experience.
  • Membership or eligibility for membership in the Canadian Institute of Planners is desired.
  • Experience in project management, developing engagement programs, drafting policy, communicating complex ideas, and working with interdisciplinary project teams.
  • Experience drafting land use policies, guidelines, or bylaws that integrate considerations related to housing, economy, social and cultural well-being, public amenities, facilities, transportation, public space, and the environment.
