About Our Opportunity

We are seeking a highly skilled and experienced Equipment Inspector Instructor to join our team at the Department of Public Works. As an Equipment Inspector Instructor, you will play a critical role in developing and ensuring Equipment Operators are fully competent in the operation of Department vehicles and equipment.

Through continuous involvement with Equipment Operators and other operational staff, you will train, test, and evaluate individuals on proper operating and maintenance techniques on various types of heavy equipment. You will provide objective advice and recommendations and contribute to the continuous improvement of Department staff and abilities.

You will assist with the development, motivation, and coaching of Equipment Operators to ensure a multi-skilled workforce and cross-training on Department equipment. You will also support the introduction of new equipment into the workplace and the development of proper service and safety procedures.

As an Equipment Inspector Instructor, you will have excellent instructional techniques and communication abilities, leading to a fully trained workforce. You will be dedicated to providing superior highway maintenance services through continual education in the prevention of incidents and minimizing equipment maintenance and repair costs.

Qualifications and Experience

We are looking for a candidate with a high school completion plus completion of a related trade or technical training in the area of specialty and three (3) years related experience. A background in the health and safety field is desirable.

Extensive travel throughout the province in various weather conditions is required. You must have a Valid Driver's License with a clean driving record. You will be able to climb in and out of machinery cabs, and in around and beneath equipment to demonstrate service training and conduct inspections when required.

You will be proficient in the operation and servicing of various types of road maintenance equipment, including Graders, Loaders, Backhoes, Excavators, Utility Tractors, Forklifts, and Skid Steer equipment. You will also be familiar with the operation and calibration of automatic salt control and dispensing systems.

You will have experience with instructional and evaluation techniques. You will have good computer skills with the ability to maintain training records using a database, and word processing skills for the creation and updating of requested reports.

You will utilize strong judgment skills and provide an objective and accurate assessment when evaluating employees in safety-sensitive situations. You will demonstrate a high level of initiative and remain up to date with industry trends and exercise a strong ability to manage your time effectively in completing priorities, tasks, and projects on time.

You will be comfortable with presenting in front of employee groups at training seminars regarding equipment, manual updates, and technological changes. You will be an advocate for safety promotion. Your ability to communicate effectively with diverse staff is essential to your role.

Working Conditions

Work will be performed in an office environment and the field, in which you will be exposed to workplace conditions (such as dust, noise, chemical, and biological hazards). You will be required to climb heights, walk in difficult areas and uneven terrain, enter or crawl in restricted spaces, climb above and below bridge structures, enter hazardous construction sites, and work in remote areas.

You will be required to wear various personal protective devices depending on the location, incident, or severity of risk from the visible and non-visible hazards. You will also be required to work irregular hours, travel throughout the province, and may be responsible for supplying your own vehicle for travel, as required.
