Perform water quality analysis and sampling for distribution system monitoring and in support of field investigations. Investigate water quality complaints and recommend methods/procedures for water testing analysis and support treatment process analysis.

You will be responsible for your personal safety and that of your co-workers by observing all Occupational Health and Safety Rules and Regulations and Halifax Water’s Occupational Health and Safety Program Manual.

Duties & Responsibilities Carry out routine sample collection, processing and analysis from distribution system locations. Perform data entry for the utility’s WaterTrax water quality database. Use the system to produce charts and graphs and assist other staff with the maintenance and development off the system. Perform visits to customer’s premises in response to questions and complaints, counsel customers, liaise with other departments, perform sample collection and analysis, as well as other investigatory measures, record, keep and close the file with the customer. Perform emergency water quality sampling in response to water quality events or distribution and supply system emergencies as required. Operate and maintain field water quality equipment and supplies as well as distribution system water quality instruments. Perform permit compliance and other scheduled work of other water quality staff in their absence. Conduct process control and monitoring analysis work for small systems. Establish and maintain comprehensive record keeping systems as required. Carry out work required for various sampling programs such as disinfection by-product monitoring, corrosion monitoring, e.coli monitoring and others which may be developed. Participate in the development of these programs. Work safely, obeying all codes and regulations and report all unsafe acts and conditions. Perform other related duties as required. Minimum Qualifications

Education and Experience

Education:

Grade 12 plus a two year technical program related to Water Treatment; or two years post-secondary training in microbiology or chemistry combined with 3 years practical experience in water quality testing and analysis.

Experience:

Previous experience in a similar environment would be an asset. Other Requirements

Certificates / Licenses / Registrations:

Must successfully complete Operator-in-Training Water Treatment Certificate within six months of date of hire. Must have a valid NS driver's license. Must be willing to undertake and maintain the following safety training: First AidGlobally Harmonized System (GHS) (Formerly WHMIS)Additional safety training as identified based on legislative and operational requirements Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Must have an elementary understanding of water quality chemistry and instrumentation. Experience with pumps and mechanical equipment would be an asset. Must be able to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing. Must have a working knowledge of personal computers, spreadsheets, word processing software and web applications. Must be prepared to wear protective clothing and equipment required for specific situations involved. Must be willing to undergo immunization treatments, and any personal health condition checks which may be required.
