Job Summary

We are seeking a highly skilled Research Scientist to join our team at Institut Rosell-Lallemand Inc. in Montreal, Canada. As a key member of our research and development team, you will be responsible for conducting research on the impact of fermentation parameters on ethanol production and the formation of flavor-active molecules.

Key Responsibilities
  • Design and Execute Experiments: Plan, conduct, and analyze experiments to investigate the effects of fermentation parameters on ethanol production and flavor-active molecule formation.
  • Generate New Ideas: Develop innovative ideas for new commercial products and research topics related to fermentation and distillation.
  • Develop New Assays: Design and implement new assays to answer technical questions and improve our understanding of fermentation and distillation processes.
  • Present Results: Communicate research findings to internal stakeholders, including the R&D Manager, sales, marketing, and management teams.
  • Write Reports: Prepare and submit internal R&D reports on research progress and findings.
  • Develop SOPs: Write and revise Standard Operating Procedures to ensure consistency and quality in our research and development activities.
  • Train and Supervise: Mentor and supervise interns and research assistants in the laboratory, providing guidance and support to ensure their success.
  • Collaborate with Teams: Work collaboratively with internal and external multi-disciplinary teams of scientists to advance our research and development goals.
Requirements
  • Practical Experience: Proven experience in bacteria or yeast research, with a strong understanding of microbial physiology and metabolic networks.
  • Communication Skills: Excellent oral and written communication skills in English, with the ability to present complex research findings to diverse audiences.
  • Supervisory Experience: Supervisory experience of employees and/or students, with a strong ability to mentor and guide others.
  • Education: Ph.D. or M.Sc. with 3+ years of experience in an appropriate science field.
  • Industry Experience: Experience in a distillery, brewery, or in the ethanol industry, with a strong understanding of fermentation and distillation processes.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Familiarity with Fermentation and Distillation: Familiarity with fermentation and distillation processes, including the ability to design and execute experiments and analyze results.
  • Advanced Statistical Analysis: Experience in advanced statistical analysis and experimental design, with the ability to interpret large genomic and/or metabolomic datasets.
  • Fluency in French: Fluency in French, with the ability to communicate effectively with colleagues and stakeholders.
