Valard, a leading utility contractor and part of the Quanta Group, is seeking a skilled Project Accountant - Major Projects to join their team in Edmonton.

This role reports to the Project Controller and involves providing accounting functions and operational cost control for assigned projects. The successful candidate will be responsible for:

  • Setting up new projects and managing account-related activities.
  • Generating client invoices and tracking billing information.
  • Maintaining and monitoring project budgets.
  • Reviewing and correcting cost coding discrepancies.
  • Verifying and administering contracts with subcontractors.
  • Managing and processing accruals for project costs.
  • Recording financial transactions through journal entries.
  • Reconciling project costs to ensure accuracy.
  • Providing support for processing change orders.
  • Compiling and organizing information for internal and external audits.
  • Assisting the Project Controller in closing and reviewing project costs on a weekly, monthly, and quarterly basis.
  • Supporting analysis of project profitability and performance.
  • Contributing to financial forecasting activities.
  • Undertaking special projects and utilizing Excel for ad hoc analyses.
  • Providing support and oversight for Accounts Payable and Accounts Receivable functions as needed.
  • Managing the closeout process for completed projects.

The ideal candidate will have a diploma or bachelor's degree in Finance, Accounting, or Business Administration, with 3-5 years of relevant experience. Proficiency in Excel is a requirement, and experience with JD Edwards or SAP is preferred. The successful candidate will be detail-oriented, have excellent problem-solving skills, and be able to work effectively under pressure.

Requirements:

Education and Experience:

  • Diploma or Bachelor's degree in Finance, Accounting, or Business Administration.
  • Construction background is desired and would be an asset.
  • 3-5 years of relevant experience.
  • Proficiency in Excel is a requirement.
  • Experience with JD Edwards or SAP is preferred.

  • Excellent knowledge of accrual-based accounting.
  • Good communication skills and the ability to work independently or as part of a team are essential.
