About the Job

The role of a Peer Support Specialist at Ottawa Inner City Health involves building trusting relationships with clients and providing support while they access services. This position requires assertiveness, empathy, and a non-judgmental attitude to effectively engage clients and advocate for their needs.

Job Responsibilities
  • Engage clients in a trusting relationship and provide support while accessing services.
  • Assertively advocate for clients' needs while enforcing rules for safe service operation.
  • Work collaboratively with an interdisciplinary team to provide comprehensive care.
Requirements and Qualifications
  • Personal experience with drug use, mental health, or homelessness is essential.
  • A willingness to work with diverse populations, including Aboriginal communities, homeless individuals, injection drug users, sex trade workers, and members of the LGBTQ2S+ community.
  • Knowledge of stimulants, opiates, and injection drug use issues is required.
  • Familiarity with alcohol abuse and its effects.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills are necessary for effective client engagement and teamwork.
  • Fluency in English is mandatory; proficiency in French, Anishinaabemowin/Ojibwe, Cree, or Inuktitut is an asset.
  • Basic computer skills, including email, word processing, and spreadsheets.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality and set appropriate boundaries with clients in crisis.
  • A well-developed sense of personal safety awareness is crucial.
  • Familiarity with harm reduction frameworks and principles.
  • Extensive knowledge of mental illness and substance use.
  • Demonstrated stability in personal life to ensure reliable attendance and minimal impact from exposure to challenging situations.
  • Assertive communication skills without aggression.
  • Tactful diplomacy to avoid offending clients.
  • Effective collaboration within an interdisciplinary team.
  • Up-to-date vaccinations and a current Standard First Aid certificate are required.
  • A Vulnerable Sector Criminal Records Check is necessary (a criminal record does not automatically disqualify applicants).

This full-time position offers a competitive salary, estimated to be around $55,000 - $65,000 per year, depending on experience and qualifications. Please note that this estimate may vary based on factors such as location and industry standards.
