Salary

The salary for this position is estimated to be between $83,343.00 and $142,422.00 per year, depending on experience.



Job Description



As Family Duty Counsel with Legal Aid Ontario, you will play a critical role in providing client service for family law matters in the courthouse. This includes intake and assessment of family law clients, provision of procedural and summary legal advice, drafting and reviewing court documents, and representation in court proceedings.



Your responsibilities will include:




  • Providing family law duty counsel services in-person and virtually, including preparation of court documents for eligible clients and referrals to mediation services
  • Representation in the Superior Court of Justice (Unified Family Court) at first appearances, conferences, motions, negotiations, and other court hearings
  • Advocating for clients in court and on court forms
  • Assisting unrepresented clients with Child Youth and Family Services Act (CYFSA) matters, including document preparation and in-court appearances
  • Providing advice lawyer services at the Family Law Information Center (FLIC) and other advice clinics
  • Ensuring high-quality legal work in a cost-effective manner
  • Maintaining client files and conflict lists
  • Recording data and producing reports as required


Required Skills and Qualifications



To succeed in this role, you will need:




  • A member in good standing with the Law Society of Ontario
  • Demonstrated knowledge and experience of relevant family law legislation, particularly child protection law, and in-court experience in both family and child protection matters
  • Client-focused approach with sound judgment and problem-solving skills
  • Results-oriented individual with accountability and ability to provide sensitive and compassionate client service
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate fluently in English and French, with the capacity to represent clients in both languages
  • Ability to draft legal documents without review and utilize latest communication technologies, including video conferencing platforms
  • Research skills and ability to maintain accurate records
