Forensic Mental Health and the Criminal Justice System Course

This course will delve into the complexities of forensic mental health issues within the criminal justice system, exploring the nature and extent of mental illness in society and the legal, social, and ethical implications that arise when a mentally disordered individual interacts with the justice system.

Course Details:
  • Course Description: This course will examine the medical and legal definitions of mental disorder, their relationship to each other, and the criteria for state-compelled treatment and its impact on individual autonomy.
  • Session: The course will be held from January 1, 2025, to April 30, 2025.
  • Lectures: Tuesdays, 6:00pm – 9:00pm (In-person).
  • Practicals/Tutorials: None.
  • Estimated Course Enrolment: 40.
  • Estimated TA Support: Approximately 60 hours.
Responsibilities:
  • Preparation and delivery of course material.
  • Preparation and delivery of assignments, tests, and/or exams.
  • Supervision of teaching assistants.
  • Marking of students' work.
  • Submission of grades to university officials.
  • Holding regular office hours.
