Job Summary:

Halifax Public Libraries is seeking a highly skilled and motivated Adult Specialist to join our team. As an Adult Specialist, you will be responsible for planning, delivering, and evaluating adult programs and events at our Woodlawn Public Library branch. You will also provide facilitation in adult programs and meetings, and work to actively engage adults in the library in formal and informal ways.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Plan, deliver, and evaluate adult programs and events
  • Provide facilitation in adult programs and meetings
  • Facilitate diverse social, recreational, and learning experiences
  • Build relationships and maintain community partnerships
  • Participate in hiring public service staff
  • Participate in hiring, training, and supporting staff in adult programming and public service
  • Recruit, hire, train, and oversee volunteers and grant-funded staff
  • Support regional projects and initiatives; participates on regional teams
  • Act as a resource in the area of adult programming and services
  • Act as Person in Charge in library branch(es)
  • Display, promote, and perform work duties in a positive and safe way and displays safety awareness at all times

Requirements:
  • Bachelor's Degree and two (2) years of related experience
  • OR Two (2) years of Post-Secondary and four (4) years of related experience
  • OR Completion of Grade Twelve (12) or equivalent and six (6) years of related experience

Additional Requirements:
  • Read and write English
  • Excellent communication, conflict resolution, and customer service skills
  • Demonstrated ability to provide instruction and training
  • Experience in program planning and delivery for adults
  • Knowledge of media and resources of interest to adults
  • Basic computer knowledge and skills including: Functions of a web browser, Microsoft Office applications, social media applications
  • Intermediate technology skills including: Willingness to learn and experiment with additional tools and technologies, Willingness to support others in learning technical skills and concepts

Assets:
  • Fluency in a second language
  • Awareness of community resources available to adults
  • Experience working with diverse communities
  • Certificate in Adult Education or post-secondary education in a human services field (e.g. literacy, social work, counseling, community health)

Travel:
The position requires occasional travel between our various library branches and community sites within the Halifax Regional Municipality.
