About the Role

We are seeking a highly skilled and dedicated Probation and Parole Officer to join our team at Ombudsman Ontario. As a key member of our community safety team, you will play a pivotal role in promoting public safety and supporting offenders in their rehabilitation journey.

Key Responsibilities
  • Provide probation, parole, and conditional sentence services to adult offenders, ensuring their safety and well-being while promoting community safety.
  • Investigate and gather information to prepare reports ordered by the Courts and the Ontario Parole Board to support sentencing and parole decisions.
  • Enhance community safety by monitoring and enforcing conditions of court orders, while also providing guidance and support to offenders.
  • Assess criminogenic and other risk and needs, and develop and implement offender case management plans to address those needs.
  • Help offenders make positive changes by guiding and supporting their efforts through meaningful interventions, skills building, cognitive-behavioral counseling, referrals, programming, and motivational interviewing.
  • Liaise with victims and build relationships with diverse criminal justice system partners and stakeholders, including police, courts, and community agencies.
Requirements
  • Hold a degree in one of the following disciplines: social work, psychology, sociology, and criminology, or a degree and experience in a social services or correctional organization.
  • Have the ability to travel regularly to remote locations and stay overnight as required.
  • Demonstrate counseling and motivational interviewing experience, relationship building skills, and the ability to develop, implement, monitor, update, and evaluate offender-focused case management.
  • Have experience in the delivery of structured individual and group interventions, and the ability to effectively gather data to support the completion of a comprehensive assessment.
  • Be able to interpret and analyze assessment information gathered through identification of offender risk, need, and responsivity.
  • Demonstrate the use of professional discretion to make timely and appropriate decisions that are aligned with offender supervision strategies, individual needs, critical analysis, policy, and legislation.
  • Have strong communication and interpersonal skills, including the ability to ensure completion of administrative components of case management, and to work effectively with colleagues, offenders, victims, stakeholders, and justice partners with diverse needs and perspectives.
  • Be able to gather and present information verbally and in writing in a clear, accurate, concise, and professional manner.
  • Demonstrate insight into the impacts on offenders, victims, and communities who have experienced the effects of systemic barriers and intergenerational trauma, and the ability to integrate culturally appropriate, relevant, and meaningful services and methods of intervention for offenders in their healing journey.
